The Peek-a-Boo Burger #WeeklyShortShortNote
An early afternoon at a burger shop. I was sitting at a window seat, snacking on fries by myself. Every time the man sitting across from me took a bite of his burger, he would glance over at me. Or, to be precise, perhaps he was looking at something behind me. Still, every time our eyes met, my heart gave a little flutter.
As I brought the paper-wrapped burger to my mouth, I tried eating it deliberately slowly. He took a bite at the exact same moment.
Our eyes met and looked away, met and looked away again—it was as if we were playing a game of romantic cat-and-mouse through our burgers.
Before I knew it, I had named it the "Peek-a-Boo Burger" in my mind and was smiling to myself.
By the time he finished eating, he wrote something on a small napkin and left it on the edge of my tray before getting up from his seat.
"The way you eat is cute. I hope we can meet here again."
Reading those words with trembling fingertips, I instinctively covered my mouth.
Even though we hadn't made any promises to meet again, I felt that if I came to this shop, I would see him again. I dreamed of the day when those "peek-a-boos" would eventually turn into a real encounter and the beginning of a relationship.
