【開催レポート】「NLCS Kobe＆NLCS Jeju合同合唱祭」を行いました

英国発のインターナショナルスクール「North London Collegiate School」。5月31日、NLCS Kobeの校舎にて、NLCS KobeとNLCS Jejuの合同合唱祭「NLCS Kobe and NLCS Jeju Choral Festival」が開催されました。

以前NLCS Jejuで音楽科主任を務め、現在NLCS Kobeに在籍する音楽教師ルース・ベイカー先生（Ms. Ruth Baker）のかけ橋により、この特別な交流が実現。通常、学校間の音楽交流や国際的なイベントは高校生を対象とすることがほとんどですが、今回はGrade 6を含むジュニアスクールの子どもたちに「音楽を通して海外校とつながる貴重な経験をしてほしい」というルース・ベイカー先生の熱い想いから、この合唱祭が企画されました。

本番前日には、両校の児童が揃ってリハーサルを実施。それまでは別々に練習してきた2校が一つの空間に集まり、お互いの声を響かせ合いながら、ハーモニーの細部までじっくりと磨き上げていきました。

また、「子どもたちにお互いの文化を共有できる機会も設けたい」と、リハーサル後には「勝尾寺」（大阪府）をみんなで訪問しました。

リハーサルからすでにお互いの距離がぐっと縮まっていた生徒たち。学校の垣根を越えた交流はさらに深まり、日本文化への理解を深めるワークショップにも生き生きとした表情で参加していました。現地での子どもたちのキラキラした反応や、言葉の壁を越えて笑顔で絆を深めていく様子は、まさにこの合同合唱祭の意義を象徴する素晴らしい光景でした。

いよいよ本番当日！この合唱祭の最大のハイライトとなったのが、このイベントのためだけに書き下ろされた新作の披露です。

作曲を手がけたのは、NLCS Jejuの音楽ディレクターであり、ルース・ベイカー先生ともJeju時代に共に働いていたハリー・サリントン先生（Mr. Harry Tharrington）。できあがった楽曲「Ancient Tales」は、とても美しく現代的。そして何より特別なのは、その歌詞です。

歌詞には、済州島の方言、英語、そして日本語が取り入れられ、済州島、六甲アイランド、六甲山など、双方の「故郷」を象徴する場所が登場するこの曲では、両校の共通点やつながりが見事に表現されています。

今回のプログラムの中で、新作の他にもう一曲、子どもたちが声を合わせた大切な楽曲があります。それが、ルース・モリス・グレイ（Ms. Ruth Morris Gray）作曲の「Wasure Ya Wasuru（忘れやわする）」です。

日本の伝統的な文学が、海を越えて合唱曲となり、そして今回、NLCS KobeとNLCS Jejuの子どもたちの歌声によってここ神戸で響き渡る。まさに、音楽が持つ「文化を繋ぎ、時を越える力」を肌で感じさせてくれる、ドラマチックな演奏となりました。

■ルース・ベイカー先生のコメント
すべてのNLCS校において、音楽は非常に重要な位置を占めています。生徒たちからは、とても学生とは思えないような演奏が生まれることもあり、そのレベルの高さにはいつも驚かされます。これは優秀な生徒たちだけでなく、各校に優れた音楽教師が数多くいることにも支えられています。

今回の合唱祭では、レパートリーの多様性も大切にしました。私はいつも、生徒たちと音楽に取り組む際、教師や生徒の“好きな曲”だけで選ぶべきではないと考えています。音楽的な幅広さと奥深さを持たせ、生徒たちに新しい挑戦をしてもらうことこそが重要です。そのため、プログラムには子どもたちに大人気のポップカルチャー作品からの楽曲も取り入れました。

また、選曲を通して日本語と韓国語の双方に触れられるよう工夫し、現代の女性作曲家にも光を当てています。クラシック音楽の世界では歴史的な男性作曲家の名前が目立ちますが、現代の作曲家に目を向けると、男女のバランスがより取れるようになってきています。これは音楽界にとっても、非常に前向きで素晴らしい変化だと感じています。

■さいごに
子どもたちの美しい歌声がホールいっぱいに響き渡った、感動のステージ。
最初は言葉や文化の違いに、どこか緊張した面持ちを見せていた子どもたちですが、前日のリハーサルやワークショップを通して、彼らの距離は一気に縮まっていきました。

ルース・ベイカー先生の「二つの姉妹校の子どもたちが一つの大きなチームとなり、音楽を通して心を一つにしていく」という言葉通り、本番のステージで披露された圧巻のハーモニーは、まさに子どもたちが「一つの大きなチーム」になった瞬間そのものでした。

音楽の力、そして子どもたちの可能性は無限大です。共に声を合わせ、笑い合ったこの日の記憶は、両校の生徒たちの心に「一生の宝物」として残り続けることでしょう。

この素晴らしいフェスティバルの開催に尽力されたすべての方々、そして大きな感動をくれた子どもたちに、心からの拍手と感謝を贈ります。

[Event Report] NLCS Kobe and NLCS Jeju Choral Festival

On May 31st, the "NLCS Kobe and NLCS Jeju Choral Festival"—a joint musical event between the two sister schools—was held at the NLCS Kobe campus.

This special collaboration was made possible thanks to Ms. Ruth Baker, a music teacher currently at NLCS Kobe who previously served as the Head of Music at NLCS Jeju. While inter-school music exchanges and international events are typically tailored for high school students, this festival was uniquely designed for Junior School pupils, including Grade 6. It was born out of Ms. Baker’s passionate wish to provide younger children with the invaluable experience of connecting with an overseas sister school through the power of music.

On the day before the main performance, pupils from both schools gathered for a joint rehearsal. Coming together in the same space for the first time, the two groups blended their voices and meticulously refined their harmonies, polishing the finer details of their performance.

With a shared desire to give the children a meaningful cultural exchange, the students visited Katsuo-ji Temple in Osaka Prefecture after their rehearsal.

Having already bonded through their morning singing, the pupils interacted warmly, further deepening their connections across schools. They participated with vibrant enthusiasm in a workshop centered on traditional Japanese culture. Seeing the children's faces light up and watching them build friendships across language barriers was a truly wonderful sight, perfectly embodying the core purpose of this joint choral festival.

Finally, the day of the performance arrived! The absolute highlight of the festival was the premiere of a brand-new piece commissioned exclusively for this event.

The piece was composed by Mr. Harry Tharrington, the Director of Music at NLCS Jeju, who had worked closely with Ms. Baker during her time in Jeju. The resulting song, "Ancient Tales," is beautiful and contemporary. What makes it truly special, however, is its lyrics.

In this song, the lyrics beautifully weave together the Jeju dialect, English, and Japanese. By featuring locations that symbolize their respective "homes"—such as Jeju Island, Rokko Island, and Mount Rokko—the track perfectly captures the shared bonds and connections between the two schools.

Alongside the new commission, there was another meaningful piece that the children performed together: "Wasure Ya Wasuru," composed by Ms. Ruth Morris Gray.

A piece of traditional Japanese literature crossed oceans to become a choral work, and on this day, it echoed right here in Kobe through the voices of NLCS Kobe and NLCS Jeju students. It was a dramatic performance that allowed everyone to truly feel music's power to connect cultures and transcend time.

■ Message from Ms. Ruth Baker
"Music holds a fundamentally important place across all NLCS schools. At times, our students deliver performances so exceptional that it is hard to believe they are school children; the sheer level of their musicianship never ceases to amaze me. This is sustained not only by our talented students but also by the presence of outstanding music teachers throughout our schools.

For this choral festival, we placed a strong emphasis on the diversity of our repertoire. I always believe that when working with students on music, we should not select pieces based solely on what the teachers prefer or what the students already like. It is vital to provide musical breadth and depth, giving students a meaningful new challenge. To that end, we also included songs from pop culture works that are immensely popular with the children.

Furthermore, we made conscious choices to ensure the selection allowed students to engage with both Japanese and Korean, while also shining a spotlight on contemporary female composers. While the classical music world often highlights historical male figures, looking at modern composers reveals a much healthier gender balance. I find this to be a highly progressive and wonderful shift within the music community."

■ In Conclusion
A deeply moving stage where the children's beautiful voices resonated throughout the entire hall.

Though the children initially showed signs of nervousness due to differences in language and culture, their rehearsal and cultural workshop on the previous day quickly closed the distance between them.

True to Ms. Baker's words—"The children of our two sister schools become one large team, uniting their hearts through music"—the breathtaking harmony displayed on the final stage was the exact moment these students became a single, unified team.

The power of music and the potential of children are truly limitless. The memories of this day, singing and laughing together, will undoubtedly remain as a lifelong treasure in the hearts of the students from both schools.

We extend our heartfelt applause and gratitude to everyone who dedicated themselves to making this wonderful festival a reality, and to the children who moved us so deeply.
