Wataru decided to reclaim his family in the first volume. That resolve is genuine, but in this middle volume, he learns that having strong feelings alone is not enough. The other world is not just dreamlike and beautiful; it also shows its mercilessly cruel side. Battles with monsters, meetings and partings with companions, and the ugliness and contradictions of humanity—Wataru must move forward while accepting it all. My heart tightened many times while reading. This is because, even though the difficulties he faces are events in another world, there are many parts that overlap with our reality. Wanting to trust people but being betrayed, losing things you tried desperately to protect—it felt like being confronted with the fact that these things can happen to anyone.
What was particularly impressive was the scene where Wataru exposes his own weaknesses and hesitations. I realized that he is not strong because he is a hero, but rather he is a hero because he keeps moving forward without stopping, even while harboring fear and conflict. I strongly empathized with that aspect of him. 'If I were in Wataru's position, would I really be able to take that first step?' The answer is certainly not simple. But watching Wataru makes me feel as though I am being pushed forward, thinking, 'Even so, I have no choice but to keep going.'
Miyuki Miyabe's writing style skillfully intersects the heaviness of reality with the brilliance of fantasy, drawing me deeper into the world of the story with every page I turn. While the descriptions of the scenery and magic in the other world are exciting, at its foundation flow universal questions such as 'What does it mean to live?' and 'What is family?'. That is why I believe this work goes beyond a simple adventure story and resonates directly with the reader's own heart.
Having finished the middle volume, I was once again made to think that 'trials await in life as well.' You cannot avoid difficulties. But I believe that how you act when they occur will certainly change the future. Wataru's journey in the other world might be the very image of how we live our daily lives in reality.
And now, my anticipation for the final volume is growing. What will Wataru grasp at the end of his journey in the other world? How will his feelings for his lost family come to fruition? A conclusion where joy and sorrow intersect surely awaits, and I am looking forward to seeing what I will feel at that moment.
