Fleeting and Beautiful
"5 Centimeters Per Second"
—Those words have remained quietly somewhere in my heart, living on in a small way forever.
Even after becoming a middle schooler and then a high schooler, Akari remains in my heart.
No matter how much time passes, or how far apart we are, the distance between us and the feelings of being hopelessly lost never fade.
On a snowy day, I boarded a train to meet Akari, who was far away.
The scenery seen from the train window, the nostalgia of the journey until arriving at the station, and the image of Akari—everything is etched into my heart.
Within me, only kindness, regret, and memories that fall slowly like those cherry blossom petals remained.
I grew up and realized I was spending my days in Tokyo, living a faint existence.
Yet, deep in my heart, I am always thinking of Akari—that day, we truly felt like our hearts were on the verge of breaking at 5 centimeters per second.
Surely, everyone experiences meetings, partings, and passing feelings.
At the speed at which cherry blossom petals dance in the spring breeze, we ourselves change little by little.
5 Centimeters Per Second
by Makoto Shinkai
"It's the speed at which cherry blossom petals fall. 5 centimeters per second." Akari, who always taught me what was important, and Takaki, who tried to protect her. The director himself novelizes the theatrical animation "5 Centimeters Per Second," which depicts the wandering of their love.

The speed at which cherry blossom petals fall—5 centimeters per second. As I read through the story, I felt these mysterious words quietly sinking into a deep place somewhere in my heart.
The feelings of the protagonist, Takaki, might sometimes feel heavy when viewed from the other person's perspective.
But I felt that his delicate and pure thoughts were very clean and beautiful.
The feeling of continuing to think of someone important, the distance that is hard to see, the nostalgia—each of these things is drawn with such care that my chest felt quietly tightened as I read.
In the scene where he goes to meet Akari on a snowy day, the way Takaki's heart instantly becomes anxious soaked into me painfully, and I felt as if I were being swayed on the train along with him.
After finishing this book, I quietly stared at the "feelings for someone important" and "past memories" that remained within me.
