The History of the Ruins of Takamatsu Castle [Tamamo Park](Kagawa, Japan)

Tamamo Park is a nationally designated historic site, deeply rooted in Japanese literary and architectural history. Its name, "Tamamo," is said to derive from the Manyoshu, an ancient poetry collection, where poet Kakinomoto no Hitomaro praised Sanuki Province with the pillow word "Tamamo yoshi," leading to the surrounding sea being known as "Tamamo no Ura."
The park itself is built on the remains of Takamatsu Castle, which served as the residence for the Ikoma family, lords of Sanuki Province, and later the Matsudaira family, lords of the Takamatsu Domain. This unique castle is renowned as one of Japan's Three Great Water Castles because it drew seawater directly into its moats from the Seto Inland Sea.
Within the park, visitors can find several important cultural assets, including the Ushitora Yagura, Tsukimi Yagura, Mizute Gomon, Watari Yagura, and Hiunkaku, all designated as National Important Cultural Properties. The Hiunkaku Garden is also recognized as a National Place of Scenic Beauty.
Tamamo Park is a vibrant hub for events, hosting diverse festivities such as cherry blossom viewing and plant fairs in spring, and chrysanthemum exhibitions in autumn. Its picturesque setting has also made it a popular filming location for movies, including "Siberia Express 3," "Spring Snow," "Tsubaki Sanjuro," "Dream Pitcher," and "Meon."
