When we talk about career paths, we tend to focus on "options" such as:
Which schoolto attend.
Which entrance examto choose.
What kind of professionto aim for.
These are the kinds of "options" we tend to focus on.
But what is truly important is, perhaps,
before that,
"What kind of life does this child want to create?"
It might be about having that perspective.
In the
Parenting Skills Up Seminar, Career Education Edition, Part 3 held on Sunday, June 7th, at 8:00 PM Japan Time,
we will learn about the theme of
"How to Create a Life Design"
together with national career consultant Toshiaki Miyauchiand learn together.
The theme of Part 3 is "How to Create a Life Design."
In the first session of the Parenting Skills Up Seminar, Career Education Edition, we thought about the learning necessary for the AI era and future career education.
In the second session, we learned about
the foundation of self-understanding
from the perspective that "not knowing what you want to do" is not a lack of effort, but perhaps just a lack of "material for self-understanding."
And in the third session, based on that self-understanding,
we will think about
how to envision a future that suits oneself.
In this coming era,
"Getting into a good school,"
"Joining a stable company,"
"Staying on the path you once decided"
—it has become difficult to foresee a child's future with only these linear routes.
That is precisely why what is needed is
not the 'ability to choose the correct answer,' but
the ability to design one's own life
I believe that is what it is.
Life design is not about 'deciding on a future dream'
When you hear 'life design,' it might sound
like a somewhat grand term.
But it is not about suddenly
'deciding on a future dream,'
'thinking about a career you want to pursue,'
'or making a life plan.'
That is not what this is about.
Rather, what is important
starts from much closer to home.
For example,
✅ When do you feel happy ✅ In what kind of environment can you bring out your
true potential ✅ When interacting with what kind of people do you feel
energized ✅ When doing what are you so
absorbed that you lose track of time ✅ What kind of things do you feel
uncomfortable with ✅ What kind of future allows you to
be yourself
It is about gathering these small realizations.
In other words, life design is not about forcing yourself to decide on a distant future,
but the process of gradually finding hints about a way of life that suits you
I believe that is what it is.
Things parents and children should think about before choosing a path
When thinking about a child's path,
parents inevitably feel anxious.
'I don't want them to fail'
'I don't want them to take a detour'
'I want them to choose the safest path possible'
Those feelings are very natural.
However, if a parent's anxiety becomes too strong,
it can sometimes become difficult to see the child's own feelings and wishes.
In reality,
every child has their own pace,
their own interests,
and an environment that suits them.
That is why, before deciding on a path, what is needed is
not just 'where to go',
'When does this child shine?'
'In what kind of environment can they feel safe to take on challenges?'
'What kind of experiences will lead to future options?'
It may be about looking at these things together.
What parents can do is not to decide the answer, but to provide a perspective.
In the coming era,
children willlive by choosing and re-choosing many times.
It is not an era where education, work style, or place of residence
are fixed to a single correct answer.
That is why what parents can do is
not to decide the answer by saying 'You must follow this path',
but to provide perspectives so that children can think, choose, and adjust for themselves.
Life design is
not just a theme for children.
Parents themselves also
re-examine the 'correct answers' and 'security' they have believed in until now,
and think about how to live in the coming era together with their children.
Part 3 should be that kind of time.
