The Story of a Housewife Starting SNS Just Before Turning 60
Done with Child-rearing and Caregiving! A New Challenge
For many years, I was busy with raising children and caring for my parents.
Before I knew it, I was almost 60.
I'm happy to have time for myself, but in quiet moments, I started wondering, "What should I do from now on?"
That was when I discovered SNS.
Honestly, at first, I thought it was "for young people."
But when I tried it, it was surprisingly fun, and above all, I felt a new world opening up.
Age doesn't matter! Anyone can enjoy SNS
I used to think, "Isn't SNS for young people?"
But once I actually started, I saw many people from my own generation active on it.
For example,
People in their 60s starting YouTube channels
People in their 50s sharing nail art on Instagram
People in their 70s taking on the challenge of TikTok
Seeing so many people sharing their interests and experiences regardless of age made me think, "I'll give it a try too!"
How did I start?
Getting started with SNS was very easy.
-
Choose an SNS that interests you
Instagram if you like photos
X (formerly Twitter) if you want to share casually with short text
YouTube or TikTok if you want to convey things through video
-
Create an account
You can easily register with just an email address or phone number!
-
Deciding what to post
Hobbies (crafts, cooking, travel)
Daily events
Past experiences and memories
At first, I worried about what I should post, but it's fine to just write down whatever comes to mind.
Then, little by little, the likes and comments started to increase.
The first one I chose was X (formerly Twitter).
However, there were so many posts about know-how that I felt it wasn't quite right, so I switched to Threads.
It feels like there are more people of my generation here.
At first, I wrote about my daily life and little complaints.
Now, I'm thinking of creating a new account to post about 'living with AI'.
The benefits of starting social media
Meeting new people Through social media, I can connect with people who share the same hobbies.
Feeling motivated to try new things It's fun to think, 'I'll try posting something like this next.'
Adding zest to daily life Even mundane daily life feels a bit exciting when I think, 'I'll post about this.'
Increased conversation with family My daughter and son sometimes give me advice, saying, 'Mom, why don't you try posting something like this?'
Points to note on social media
Social media is a fun tool, but there are things you should be careful about to use it safely.
-
Managing personal information
Do not carelessly disclose personal information such as your address, phone number, or photos of your family's faces.
Turn off settings that automatically add location information.
-
Be careful of negative comments
Some people may leave heartless comments, so try not to let them bother you too much.
Use comment restrictions or block features if necessary.
-
Be wary of scams and fake accounts
Social media can have scam solicitations and suspicious business offers, so do not trust things easily.
Do not interact with suspicious links or messages.
-
Do not become too dependent on social media
Be careful not to get so absorbed that you disrupt your daily rhythm.
Enjoy it while keeping a moderate distance.
Summary
It is a waste to give up just because you think, "I'm too old..."!
Social media is a tool that anyone can enjoy. Why not try enjoying a new world while posting at your own pace?
However, it is important to continue without overdoing it while following safety precautions to enjoy it securely.
I am still a beginner myself, but I will continue to take on new challenges through social media!
