Nemu, Guest Lecture at the University of Tokyo [Special Topics in Artificial Reality]

I am a virtual beautiful girl, but I gave a lecture at the University of Tokyo!

As a guest lecturer for the June 14, 2022 session of Professor Masahiko Inami's graduate course "Special Topics in Artificial Reality" at the University of Tokyo, I used my book "Metaverse Evolution Theory" as a subject to explain the culture and potential of the metaverse from the perspective of someone who actually lives in it. I appeared online as a VTuber from the metaverse space (Neos VR) using an avatar and a voice changer. I have summarized the reactions and feedback I received.

University of Tokyo "Special Topics in Artificial Reality"

According to the University of Tokyo syllabus, Professor Masahiko Inami's graduate course at the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, "Special Topics in Artificial Reality," is described as follows.

In this course, we will focus on VR and human augmentation engineering, and discuss the underlying concepts and expected applications while inviting guest lecturers as appropriate.

It has already been two years since lectures began to be held online. What are the advantages and disadvantages compared to face-to-face lectures? And how can they be improved?

This course approaches such issues from the perspective of information technology. Specifically, it deals with fields often referred to as xR in recent years, such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), Diminished Reality (DR), and Mixed Reality (MR).

In this course, we will discuss various topics related to VR and human augmentation engineering, such as:

・What does the digital transformation (DX) of lectures mean?
・How can VR and human augmentation engineering be utilized in society, and what kind of impact will they have?
・What problems does the current metaverse face, and how should they be improved?

and so on.

Appearing from the metaverse space!

I appeared online (via Zoom) as a VTuber from the metaverse space (Neos VR) using an avatar and a voice changer.

This is how I gave the lecture

I ended up making 87 slides!

I set up the agenda like this.

Reactions from the students

It seems that faculty members, including Professor Narumi, who is famous for his research on cross-modal phenomena, also attended!

Professor Amemiya, who researches somatosensory and illusions in VR, was also there! I am humbled to realize after the fact that so many big names in VR research were present...

Nemu's thoughts

I didn't realize a class at the University of Tokyo lasts 105 minutes! I wondered if I could talk for that long, but I got so absorbed in speaking, and received so many questions and insights from both the students and Professor Inami, that the discussion became very lively, and we ended up going a little over the class time. I was nervous, but I felt the enthusiasm and was stimulated myself, making it a very fun time.

The main points where the discussion heated up were the following three!

  • How to define the metaverse for constructive discussion (whether immersion is considered essential, and clarifying points that are easily confused with Web3 and NFTs)

  • The problem of VR sickness in the spread of the metaverse (my position is that while a complete solution is difficult, it will still become widespread)

  • How does self-perception in the metaverse affect the mind and real life, how do you switch your self, and how do you concretely find a new self?

Achievement unlocked: Giving a lecture at the University of Tokyo as a virtual beautiful girl! It feels like humanity has advanced to another stage, doesn't it! (?)

Professor Inami has even appeared at my events before. Thank you for this valuable opportunity!
