[Short Story] Everyday Life Unleashed
"Yay! Today's school lunch is curry rice!"
As I was getting excited after the morning classes ended, Miku said one thing.
"As always, you don't seem like a middle school girl at all. You're completely about food over romance."
"Of course. You can't fill your stomach with romance."
I rummaged through my bag and pulled out a wooden spoon.
"Oh, fully prepared today, I see."
Miku said with a half-smile. Seriously, it was a disaster last time I forgot this.
Long ago, a man named Uri Geller showed off spoon-bending on TV, and children all over the country who saw it started imitating him everywhere. Most of the children who bent spoons seemed to be using tricks or just brute force, but some actually awakened their abilities. My parents were like that. However, while my parents could only bend small pieces of metal like spoons, it manifested a bit more strongly in me. Any metal I grasp bends regardless of my will.
"Last time, you were struggling to get the curry into your mouth before the spoon bent, weren't you?"
Exactly. You have no idea how hard it is to eat curry with a spoon that keeps bending and twisting. Plus, it wasn't just the handle bending; the scooping part would go flat or curl backward—it was total chaos. To put it simply, it was like trying to eat curry with a spoon made of paper. See? Impossible, right?
"In the end, you were eating with your hands. It was a way of eating you wouldn't expect from a Japanese person."
Shut up, leave me alone. I wanted to eat that curry no matter what!
I don't know where they heard it, but I've been targeted by shady organizations saying I should develop my abilities further or use them for the sake of the nation. But I absolutely refuse that. I want to remain an ordinary middle school student.
"Oh, watch out for a light blue light car on your way home today. The license plate is... XXXX."
Miku said suddenly with a vacant look in her eyes.
"Got it, thanks. Them again?"
Last month, some weirdos tried to drag me into a van, so I grabbed the sliding door with both hands to resist, and the car body rippled like a wave from that point. Naturally, the car couldn't drive, and they abandoned it and ran away.
"No, these guys might be rougher than the last ones. I can see a stun gun, so aren't they planning to put you to sleep first?"
Miku's ability is "precognition." Thankfully, she has saved me many times.
"Understood. I'll ask Nagiko."
My classmate Nagiko's ability is "neutralization." If it's a car, she makes it stall; if it's a stun gun, she prevents it from generating electricity; if it's a TV, she makes it stop showing a picture. Well, simply put, she causes them to malfunction. Unlike me, Nagiko can properly control her ability, so I envy how she can apply it with pinpoint accuracy.
While we were talking about this and that, the plate with the curry floated right in front of me. Today's lunch duty was Yuta. He can make small things levitate. Miku grabbed my plate too and gently placed it on the tray. Oh, Miku, you're just like a mother.
"Well then. Let's dig in!"
Curry eaten with a wooden spoon is incredibly delicious. I won't let go of such a fun daily life. We are just middle school students. We might be a little different from other people, but hiding or sealing that away is ridiculous. Even if we are different from others, this is our daily life. That's all there is to it.
(End)
Good evening. I wrote this while wondering if something like this would be okay... After jumping over from Aruno-san's article, it looked so much fun.
Aruno-san's project is here.
But this isn't really a power of darkness. Aruno-san, if the direction is too different, please just quietly leave it aside 💦
It was fun to write. Thank you very much.
