Commentary tucked inside the book
"This is a story from back when the puppy and the kitten were best friends and lived together." The story begins with this opening. There are no moral lessons; it feels like peeking into the minds of small children where every day is a new adventure.
It makes you chuckle, warms your heart, and is even a little surreal.
The illustrations are also by Josef Capek, and they have such a charming, distinct style.
Postscript
Josef Capek is Karel Capek's older brother. He is also the artist who drew the illustrations for many of Karel's books. The story proceeds in a heartwarming way as the best-friend puppy and kitten solve minor incidents with wildly imaginative ideas. The author himself even appears in the story as a writer struggling with ideas.
I love how the structure feels as if he is telling the story directly to children.
