AviUtl Intensive Training (May 2025) Day 4: Troubleshooting Errors
I will write articles about what I learned about AviUtl over the course of five days. Day 4 is about how to deal with errors that occur in AviUtl.
Loading Errors
If file loading errors occur frequently, you need to check your AviUtl setup.
Without "L-SMASH Works," the number of file formats that AviUtl can load will be limited.
Install L-SMASH Works and add it to exedit.ini.
Errors Due to File Names or Folder Names
Some characters cannot be used in file names and folder names (forbidden characters).
If a forbidden character is included in the name, you may not be able to load or save the file.
You will know immediately because a message will appear when you enter such characters.
This is the cause when the save button does not respond while saving a project, etc. It is difficult to notice because no message is displayed when saving.

How to deal with it
Cannot load files:Check the file name and folder name.
Save button does not respond:Avoid forbidden characters.
Noise in Smartphone Videos
When you load footage shot on a smartphone, gray noise may occur in the playback window.
This noise persists even if you encode the video.

This is a problem I faced when using live-action footage for the Spring Relay.
After searching for a solution, I was able to load the video normally using the method on the following page.
How to deal with it
1. VLC Media Player -> Media -> Convert/Save -> Select multiple videos you want to convert (you can use save as with multiple selection) -> Convert/Save
2. Profile -> Video - H.264 + MP3 (MP4)
3. Wrench icon to the right of Profile -> Video codec -> Encoding parameters
4. Codec -> MPEG-4 -> Save
5. If you do not want to overwrite the source, check "Append '-converted' to file name" 6. Start
Summary
As my knowledge of AviUtl has increased, dealing with problems has become easier.
However, I feel that I still lack professional knowledge in video editing, so I would like to focus on those areas in the future.
