[Smart Home] Alexa Routine Voice Reminders to Completely Prevent Forgetting to Take Out Recyclables on Monday Mornings
Recyclable collection days only come around every other week or on specific days of the week.
By the time you realize, "Oh, it's trash day today!", the collection truck has already passed. You then have to keep a pile of trash on your balcony or in your entryway until the next collection day...
This is a "household oversight" that significantly lowers your quality of life at home.
Many people set reminder notifications on their smartphones, but in the busy morning hours, there is no time to look at the screen, and the reality is that we often ignore the notification sound.
If you miss the screen, text notifications are completely meaningless.
That is why I introduced a reminder hack that has my smart speaker, Amazon Echo (Alexa), call out directly with a voice prompt in the living room on the morning of trash collection day.
This has completely revolutionized my household's trash disposal habits.
"Voice Interruption" to Free Up Brain Memory During Busy Mornings
Weekday mornings are a constant stream of multitasking: preparing for work, getting the kids ready, cleaning up breakfast, and so on.
Allocating brain memory to manage household schedules, like "What day is it today?", is actually a major source of stress.
Especially when working as an engineer, my head tends to be full of work code and designs.
In that state, remembering exactly that "every other Monday is plastic bottle day" is simply impossible.
That is why I introduced "forced voice interruption" via Alexa.
The setup is very simple.
Open the Alexa app on your smartphone and register a reminder or routine to have it speak the following announcement every Monday at 7:20 AM.
"This is a reminder. Today is the collection day for plastic bottles and cardboard. Please don't forget the trash bags gathered in the entryway."
Amidst the morning hustle and bustle, even in a living room filled with the sounds of the TV and children's voices, Alexa's clear synthesized voice strangely reaches your ears.
Unlike smartphone notifications, you don't need to go out of your way to pick up a device and check the screen.
Information that enters through the ears directly hits the brain's action switch without interfering with visual tasks.
"Externalizing Agency" to Involve the Whole Family
Another major benefit of this voice reminder is that 'the whole family hears the same information at the same time'.
With a smartphone reminder, only the person who set it (usually just one of the parents) notices it.
Therefore, even if the rule is 'whoever notices it does it,' the same person ends up taking out the trash every time, which becomes a source of silent frustration.
However, when Alexa shouts 'It's trash day!' at high volume in the living room, the whole family realizes it at the same time.
This turns the task of taking out the trash from an 'individual memory' into a 'shared event for the whole living room'.
A natural division of labor has emerged, with people saying, 'Alexa said so, so I'll take it since I'm free.'
By delegating the responsibility to an external system like a smart speaker, friction between spouses over 'who said what' is completely eliminated.
Solving things with systems: An engineer dad's housework hack
We tend to dismiss small daily mistakes as being due to a 'lack of attention' and rely on willpower.
However, human attention and memory have limits. This is especially true when you are exhausted from childcare and work.
The important thing is to stop relying on memory and create a 'system' where mistakes cannot happen.
When morning comes, Alexa speaks automatically, you notice, gather the trash, and complete the reminder.
With just this simple setting, forgetting to take out the trash has been completely eradicated in our home.
If your family is struggling with frequent forgetfulness regarding housework, please try having Alexa memorize your trash collection schedule.
You'll be able to use your brain's memory more efficiently for other thoughts.
