The Future Painted by AI: Is Creativity What Our 'Hearts' Feel?

Wow, the recent evolution of AI is truly remarkable, isn't it!

Writing text, creating beautiful art, composing music...
It accomplishes things we once thought were "amazing" in the blink of an eye.

Every time I encounter such news, I feel excitement for the future, but at the same time,
I wonder if some of you might also find yourselves thinking,

"What will happen to our creativity from now on?"

Sometimes we see something created by AI and wonder, "Is this also creative?"
Or we might feel, "No, no, surely things created by people with heart are what's truly creative!"

I hear various voices on this.

Today, I would like to take a moment to ponder this "creativity" in the AI era together with all of you.

Let's organize! What's the difference between "creative" and "creativity"?

Before we dive into the main topic, please let me organize these terms a little.

These two words seem similar, but they have slightly different nuances.

• Creative: This is mainly used to mean "having the quality of creating" or "original," as in "creative work." Also, in industries like advertising, it can refer to the production itself.

• Creativity: This refers to the power of "originality" or "the ability to bring something new into existence" itself.

Roughly speaking, a person who possesses the power of "creativity" does "creative" work, and the result is a "creative (production)."

I think keeping this in mind will make it a bit clearer when thinking about the topic of AI and creativity.

Is what AI produces "creative"? There are many different voices.

Now, for the main question: "Is AI creative?"
It's really interesting because there are so many different opinions on this!

I understand the feeling of thinking, "Yeah, there is creative potential there!"

• Unexpected discoveries: There are times when AI finds fragments of novel ideas or expressions from vast amounts of data that we humans wouldn't think of. I've also experienced that moment of going, "Oh!" (laughs).

• A trigger for inspiration: If you use AI for brainstorming, it can act as a stimulus, leading to human creativity blossoming with thoughts like, "I see, there was that way of thinking too!" It's like a reliable partner.

• If it moves the heart, is that okay too?: Even if it was created by AI, if the output deeply touches someone's heart or provides a new perspective... I think it can be said to be "creative" as a result.

On the other hand, there are also voices saying, "Hmm, maybe it can't be called 'creative' yet..."

• Where does the passion to "create" come from?: AI doesn't have the inner feelings or desires that we humans have, like "I want to convey this!" or "I want to create this kind of world!" It might be true that it is based solely on calculations.

• Is it truly "original"?: What AI produces is, in the end, something that mimics or combines patterns from the vast amount of data it has learned. Some view this as different from the "zero-to-one" creation that brings forth entirely new concepts. I can see that point, too.

• Is there no process of trial and error?: When we create something, it's filled with struggles, failures, and various experiences. It has been pointed out that AI lacks that human-like process.

Perhaps what matters most isn't 'who made it,' but 'how it moved our hearts'?

After listening to various opinions, the perspective I personally feel might be 'it' is: 'how the person who ultimately received it felt.'

Even if it was created by AI.
If listening to that music brings tears to your eyes, if looking at that painting warms your heart, or if reading that text gives you a sudden realization...

If there is something that moves our hearts and enriches our lives in that way, then I think it transcends whether the creator is human or AI,
and it is a very valuable 'creative experience'.

Of course, knowing the process of 'how it was made' is also interesting!

But more than that, what kind of color or emotion the created work brings to our daily lives—that 'impact' might be the most important thing of all.

Towards the Future: The Shape of 'Creativity' Will Surely Change Too!

With the arrival of AI as a new partner, I feel that the question 'What is creativity?' has entered a new stage.

It's exciting, isn't it?

• AI should become a reliable tool that further expands our creativity.

• Even things created by AI have a lot of potential to move people's hearts.

• Not just 'who made it and how,' but the yardstick of 'how I felt when I received it' will likely become even more important from now on.

Perhaps the very meaning of the word 'creativity' will continue to be updated from here on out.

I think that is something to really look forward to.

Of course, I think there are issues regarding how we interact with AI that we need to think about. But first, I want to view this change positively and think about what kind of new value we can create together with AI, and how we can give shape to our desire to 'create'.
