You Can Become a Curator Even as an Adult
Curator. I feel like I've heard that word before, but what do they actually do? ...Oh! Are they the people sitting here and there in an exhibition hall?
That is sometimes what people say.
I think curators are surprisingly unknown, even though people seem to know them. (By the way, the people sitting there are not curators. They are doing the important job of 'gallery attendants,' protecting the safety of the artworks and the venue.)
According to the website of the Agency for Cultural Affairs, which oversees art museums and museums,
A curator is a specialized staff member stationed at a museum, as defined by the 'Museum Act,' who performs tasks such as the collection, storage, exhibition, and research of museum materials, as well as other related activities.
Qualifications to become a curator can be obtained by: 1. Earning credits at a university or junior college, or 2. Passing the qualification certification exam conducted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
It said so.
That's right. There is no age limit, so anyone who wants to become one can do so if they follow the necessary steps and clear them!!!
There is a law called the 'Museum Act,' and furthermore, there is a field of study called 'Museology'!!! In the curator course, you learn a wide range of content, starting from an introduction to museums, to material theory, educational theory, media theory, and even management theory.
At the same time, you also need to regularly participate in related practical training. In addition to lecture-style classroom learning, you also learn the entire range of practical work, such as fieldwork, actually planning exhibitions, and the delivery, removal, and display of artworks.
If you pass the exams and graduate, you can finally earn your curator qualification!
However, it is certainly not easy.
Actually, there are quite a lot of intensive classes. Moreover, you have to do it in parallel with the studies of the department or course you are enrolled in... well, you could simply say it's just 'increasing the number of credits you have to earn'...
..................................
At first, I planned to proceed in parallel with my department studies, but since the practical training schedule was only held once a year, considering my (planned) years of enrollment at the university... I realized that if I didn't prioritize the curator course, it would perfectly clash with my graduation thesis!
But thanks to studying to be a curator in advance, visiting art museums and museums has become more efficient and enjoyable than ever before.
