Demystifying AI: Essential Knowledge to Know Before Starting a Side Hustle
Hello, I'm Nakashi🌱
Actually, I always failed high school Japanese. I was terrible at writing essays and thought, 'Writing is impossible for me...'
But now, I use AI as my partner to update my note daily.
'AI seems kind of amazing,'
'But I might not actually understand it well...'
Many of you might feel that way, right?
Recently, we hear terms like 'AI side hustle' and 'AI-generated content,' but who or what is AI in the first place? How should we approach it?
Why not gently organize the 'big picture of AI' that you think you know but don't really?
In this article, I will carefully explain everything one by one, from the definition and history of AI to current trends and how it relates to our lives and side hustles.
※For those interested in monetizing note👇
AI is a 'machine that pretends to think'
First, AI (Artificial Intelligence) refers to 'artificial intelligence' in Japanese.
It refers to things that imitate human intellectual activities using computers.
For example:
Writing text (ChatGPT)
Generating images (Midjourney, etc.)
Recognizing and converting voice (Siri, Google Voice Typing)
Optimizing routes (Google Maps)
Providing recommendations (YouTube, Netflix)
These are all types of AI.
However, what is important here is that 'it looks like it is thinking, but it is not actually thinking.'
AI operates based on statistical data and learning patterns, and it does not have a will or emotions like a human.
In short, AI is a machine that is good at 'pretending to think'.
However, because that 'pretending' is so realistic, we are able to have natural conversations with it.
Tracing the history of AI reveals a cycle of expectations and disappointments.
Actually, AI is not a technology that appeared recently.
The term 'AI' was first used in 1956.
At an academic conference called the Dartmouth Workshop, the dream that 'human intelligence could be reproduced by machines' was discussed.
The subsequent flow is as follows:
1980s: Expert systems (rule-based AI) became popular
1990s: The AI winter (attention faded due to technical limitations)
2000s: The machine learning boom arrived
2010s: Rapid advancements in image and speech recognition through deep learning
2020s: Explosive evolution of natural language processing AI, such as ChatGPT
After this history of 'expectation → disappointment → evolution → explosion,' AI has finally arrived in our lives in a 'usable form'.
Today's AI is good at 'generating'
A feature of 2020s AI is the emergence of Generative AI.
It is what is known as 'GenAI,' and it is capable of the following:
ChatGPT → Text generation, summarization, dialogue
Midjourney / DALL·E → Image generation
ElevenLabs → Speech synthesis
Runway → Video generation
Notion AI / Canva AI → Assistance in generating documents and designs
What is particularly noteworthy is that it has become something that 'individuals can also use'.
We have entered an era where AI, once accessible only to experts, can now be used by anyone simply by logging in.
This democratization is what is fueling the new form of AI-based side hustles.
AI is 'an entity that complements human creativity'
The concern that 'AI will take our jobs' is often heard.
But in reality, it is more practical to use AI as an 'entity that complements' rather than one that 'takes away'.
For example:
Not good at writing from scratch → Have AI create a draft
Cannot come up with ideas → Try brainstorming with ChatGPT
Documents are hard to read → Have Notion AI organize them
Difficult to explain → Have AI suggest simpler phrasing
In this way, AI becomes a partner that fills in your weaknesses and enhances your strengths.
It is not that AI 'catches up to humans,' but rather that
humans 'mastering AI' creates new creativity.
That is the mindset required right now.
Summary: If you understand AI, side hustles will become less scary
AI is not a magical entity.
However, if you understand it correctly and make it your ally, it becomes a very reliable partner.
Being able to answer the question 'What is AI?'.
That is the first step to an AI side hustle.
Instead of using it without understanding,
by 'daring to pause and learn,' you will be able to take a step forward without rushing.
AI is not your enemy.
It is an 'intelligence expansion device' that will always be by your side.
