The Mystery of Birth Order
- An Introduction to Steiner Education (An Introduction to Steiner Education)

The firstborn is a ruler who protects the past.
They protect traditions and family, and uphold their beliefs.
And, as a bridge between the parents and the younger siblings,
they possess two faces: an adult face and a child's face.
The second-born is an artist living in the present.
While they respect the firstborn, they do not wish to be like them.
They behave in a childlike, free-spirited manner.
They are closest to spiritual existence,
walking on a rope stretched between heaven and earth.
The third-born prepares for the future and transcends all logic.
They strive to overcome great difficulties through hard work.
To create the great scroll of life, not one of these three
can be missing.
The insights presented in this book provide profound realizations.
Phrases like "the older child is reliable, while the younger one goes at their own pace..."
often come up in daily conversation, but
I am surprised by the depth of the content regarding the meaning of birth order,
including the differences between boys and girls.
Of course, it is meaningless to label a child by saying,
"Because they are the Nth child, they are..."
Even so,
whether one is born first or second
is just as significant a factor in shaping a person's character and life
as being born male or female.
Just as it is meaningful to know whether a child is a boy or a girl
and to educate them while understanding those tendencies,
I believe that knowing the tendencies and meanings associated with a child's birth order
is a great help in educating them.
It should also be useful for understanding oneself and others.
The excellence of this book lies not just in organizing the tendencies of firstborns,
but in deepening that understanding to teach us about the nature of the world,
and the meaning of people being born in different orders and helping one another.
For me, the story of "Cain and Abel," which seemed like an eternal mystery,
feels much easier to understand when considering the different roles of the first and second born.
Beyond that, it also writes about the meanings of brothers and sisters in various myths,
and examples of real historical figures.
"The older child is obedient and serious, but
the younger child is rebellious and selfish, which is a problem."
or
"The younger child plays by themselves and is no trouble, but
the older child clings to the parents and is a handful."
When you feel that way, please pick up this book.
When you realize that this is a mysterious arrangement thought out by the balance of the great world,
you will be struck with a deep sense of awe.
