I tried it and it was surprisingly doable, so
I've summarized the process here.
■ Here is the rough process
Create the original manuscript → Convert files → Create a cover → Register with KDP → Upload → Set up distribution → Start distribution🎉 → You can also publish paper books
■ STEP 01: First, create the original manuscript
Basically, you should create the contents of the picture book one page at a time.
Double-page spreads don't display well on Kindle, so they are a no-go.
The size can be square or rectangular;
either is fine.
It's easier later if you create the cover and afterword at the same time.
I think it's best to proceed by getting everything ready beforehand!
💬 This is how I did it
There is a way to put text directly into the pictures, but
I chose to paste the AI-generated pictures into Word
and input the text afterward.
That made it easier to make fine adjustments.
⚠️ Things you tend to get stuck on when creating pictures with AI
As the number of pages increases,
the character's appearance can change along the way.
The cat's fur color might change, or
an adult dog might turn into a puppy before you know it😅
I recommend checking frequently as you proceed.
Also, AI is not good at putting text into pictures,
and sometimes strange characters or garbled text can get mixed in.
Personally, I felt that Gemini was relatively better.
Even so,
it is more reliable to input important text yourself afterward.
■ STEP 02:
Convert the file format
Once the manuscript is done, arrange the pages other than the cover (including the afterword) in order and compile them into a PDF.
Actually, you can upload it as a PDF,
but for some reason, the pages can sometimes get misaligned...
So I recommend converting it one more step.
1. Download Kindle Creator, which is published by Amazon
(it's free)
2. Convert that PDF into KPF format using Kindle Creator
3. Prepare the cover separately as a JPEG
✅ Once you've done this, you're ready to go!
Once you have the KPF file and the JPEG cover, you're all set.
All that's left is to upload it!
■ STEP 03-08:
Registering and Publishing on KDP
From here on, you'll be working with a service called Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing).
If you have an Amazon account, you can log in directly,
so there's no need to register a new one.
・Log in with your Amazon account (or register a new one if you don't have one)
・Register your Kindle account
・Enter book information such as the title, author name, and description
・Upload the KPF file (main text) and the JPEG cover
・Set the price and distribution territories
・Once it passes review, distribution begins 🎉
・If you wish, you can also publish a physical book
(paperback)
💡 About the registration screen
KDP supports Japanese,
but there are some items
that are a bit hard to understand.
I also had a few moments where I thought,
"What does this mean...?" lol.
But if you look them up one by one as you go,
you'll be fine.
Once you get past that, registration is complete!
