A New Baroque Flute Has Arrived 2

It was on May 5, 2024, that I introduced the video of 'Instrument Maker Rudolf Tutz'.

At that time, I was moved by seeing the footage of the precious instrument-making process, and I wrote the article because I really wanted to share it with everyone.

Two months have passed since then.

To my surprise, a flauto traverso made by Mr. Rudolf Tutz himself has arrived at my place.

Mr. Rudolf Tutz passed away in 2017, so it is impossible to have a new one made. (These instruments are basically ordered from the workshop as custom-made.) For that reason, I had given up on the idea of buying one of his instruments in the first place, but by chance, while looking at an instrument shop's website, I saw a used traverso for sale, and when I looked closely, it was one made by Mr. Rudolf Tutz.

It is a model called I.H. Rottenburgh (the maker's name), which is a copy of the model that was used exactly during Bach's time (around 1700 to 1750) and one I had really wanted.
The condition was good and the price was reasonable, so I thought, 'A chance like this will never come again!' and I took the plunge and bought it. If it were put up for auction, the price would eventually go up due to collectors and I wouldn't be able to afford it, but I am truly grateful to the person who let go of the instrument and to the conscientious instrument shop this time.

This flute was made 40 years ago, a work from when Tutz was 44 years old. It looks very beautiful, and the material is European boxwood with ivory for the yellow parts. My hands shook a little when I touched it for the first time. When I had my flute teacher look at it, they said I should adjust the position of the cork, but they also said it has a glossy, bright tone, good sound response, and is easy to play. Yes, it really feels good to have the sound come out instantly. That is because the person who used it before me had firmly established the path for the sound. That is also the benefit of a used instrument.

This is a special birthday present from Mr. Tutz!! (My birthday was 10 days before it arrived) I was so excited that I did a little dance.

Thinking that Mr. Tutz is here gives me motivation!!
It is truly an easy instrument to play. Because it is comfortable to play, I have started to be able to play with the image I want to express. I realized once again that this is what choosing an instrument is all about. I plan to debut with this instrument at this month's recital.

I would like to play it with care so that I can pass it on to the next generation.

And, it has been half a year since I had my current Charles Bizey made. It is still an instrument that needs to be nurtured from here on out, so I would like to use both of them well depending on the musical piece.
