"Continuing for 3 Years": Looking Back to Make Good Memories
Middle school lasts three years, and so does high school. Entering, learning, growing, and graduating—"three years" feels like a complete and natural period, a good marker in life.
In business, too, mid-term management plans often span three or five years. I believe three years is an ideal duration to commit to a goal and see it through.
As I was reflecting on this, I came across a wonderful article I'd like to share. "Furaibou@Amanojaku Coach no Shiten Note" is written by a true veteran, celebrating their 21st year as a coach and consultant.
If I were to apply this concept to my own system development projects, it would look something like this:
~0.5 Years (The Learning Period)
The skills you have rarely perfectly match what's needed for a new assignment. During this time, you need to acquire the necessary skills for that specific environment, reset your previous methods and mindsets, and adjust to the current situation.
~2 Years (The Practice Period)
This involves trial and error, applying what you've learned. You then take the results, gather feedback, and further refine or standardize your processes.
~3 Years (The Application Period)
This final stage is about applying and developing various approaches. You'll streamline and automate processes with an eye toward future handovers, ensuring that workflows aren't dependent on specific individuals.
I believe that unless you complete these three cycles, the accumulated know-how won't truly become ingrained, and you won't reach a level where you can consistently earn from it.
That's why, once I decide to do something, I aim to stick with it for three years. Of course, there are exceptions, such as when you feel your well-being is at risk, or if you achieve your goal before the three-year mark.
There have been many times when I've grown tired or felt like giving up. I've stopped and even retreated on several occasions.
So, here's my suggestion:
Before you quit, take a moment to pause. Remember your initial objective, and ask yourself, "What do I truly want to do?"
It's perfectly fine to slow your pace or make course corrections. Even corporations make downward revisions to their plans.
Think about club activities in school. Even if you didn't win a championship, haven't you looked back later and thought, "I'm glad I stuck with it for three years"?
"A lot happened, but I'm glad I kept going."
If you have a feeling that you'll be able to say something similar when you look back later, perhaps continuing just a little longer might change everything.
P.S. I plan to continue writing on Note for three years.
