How a Novice Not Only Kept Their Job from AI, But Landed One
"Hmm, AI can handle this job too, huh?"
It's a common concern: many engineering roles are reportedly at risk of being replaced by AI. This is particularly true for software engineers, as programming and AI are highly compatible, making AI adoption an inevitable reality.
Recently, I read an article featuring Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, the company behind the generative AI model, Claude.
Amodei warned that AI could eliminate half of all entry-level white-collar jobs and cause unemployment to skyrocket to 10-20% within the next one to five years. He titled his piece, "Behind the Curtain: A white-collar bloodbath."
Who Exactly is "Entry-Level"?
So, in the Japanese context, who exactly are these "entry-level" individuals? Since "entry-level" refers to people with little to no work experience, this typically includes:
Recent university graduates: Those who join a company in a generalist role and are then assigned to administrative departments like planning, sales, marketing, human resources, or accounting.
Mid-career hires with no prior experience: Individuals stepping into specific specialized roles—such as IT support, content creation, or basic data analysis—where experience isn't a prerequisite. They usually acquire the necessary skills through on-the-job training (OJT) after joining.
For a Systems Engineer (SE), this would mean someone new to the field, or with limited experience, who has just started with foundational coding, testing, or system operation support after completing training or OJT.
Is There Only Despair for Entry-Level?
Absolutely not! All sorts of unexpected things happen in the real world.
Take, for example, individuals who became software engineers thanks to ChatGPT.
Believe it or not, there are people with zero prior programming experience who, on a whim, started coding with ChatGPT and successfully landed jobs as software engineers.
One such inspiring story comes from Ami Otsuka, author of "How My Life Changed After Creating 100 Apps in 100 Consecutive Days Using ChatGPT and Posting Them on X." She literally created a new app every day with ChatGPT and shared it on X for 100 straight days.
My takeaway is this: in any era, those who go above and beyond stand out and thrive.
Having done some programming myself, I can tell you that even with ChatGPT's help, creating an app for 100 consecutive days is genuinely tough.
To give you a rough idea, for those familiar with "note" (a Japanese content platform), it's like "making 5 posts a day for 100 consecutive days."
These two stories reinforced my belief that doing something most people wouldn't, to that extent, truly becomes a powerful strength and a key differentiator.
I hope these insights prove helpful as you navigate the AI era!
