OpenAI Announces Swift Response to Sora 2 Copyright Issues—What Creators Need to Know Now
Good morning, Mugi~♪
Thank you so much for coming to Mugi-ya's note during your Sunday morning! Whether you're off today or not, I'd be happy if you could give this a quick read (´∀`)
Actually, I'm writing this article because there is some very important information regarding the trending video generation AI that I want to share with everyone.
This is content that I especially want those involved in creative activities to know about.
Sora 2 was even more fun than I imagined when I actually tried it!
OpenAI's video generation AI, "Sora 2," was released on September 30, 2025.
I'll be honest. It's incredibly fun.
You can animate characters you've drawn yourself, or use the "Cameo feature" to create videos where you appear as an astronaut or a medieval knight. It doesn't just create videos from text; it even synchronizes voices and sound effects naturally.
I definitely think this is a technology that will change the future of creativity.
However, I've also seen some concerning posts on social media. While many videos of popular Japanese characters are being posted, there have been reports that some major American characters are restricted from being generated.
Various discussions have been arising regarding this handling of copyright.
OpenAI CEO Announces Countermeasures in Just 4 Days
Amidst all this, just four days after the release, on October 4, 2025,
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman released a statement on his blog.
I was surprised by the speed of this response.
The content announced by Mr. Altman can be broadly divided into two points.
Response 1: Providing "Detailed Control Features" to Copyright Holders
It seems that in the future, copyright holders will be able to set more detailed configurations regarding their characters.
Ability to specify how characters are used
The option to choose "not to be used at all" will also be available
You can set the scope for fan fiction (derivative works)
This means shifting from the current "opt-out" (requesting not to be used) method to a system where rights holders have more control.
Response 2: Consideration of "Revenue Sharing" for Copyright Holders
If a user creates a video using a character and generates revenue, they are considering a mechanism to share a portion of that with the copyright holder.
Details are yet to be determined, and they plan to introduce it on a trial basis. I felt that their stance of trying to create a "system for paying fair compensation" rather than just saying "you cannot use it" is positive.
Mention of "Consideration for Japanese Content"
What was particularly impressive was the part that said, "We pay respect to Japan's remarkable creativity." They went out of their way to specifically mention Japanese content.
I would like to commend their stance of showing this much of a response just four days after the issues were pointed out.
My Personal Thoughts—The Importance of Advance Preparation

There is something I personally felt regarding this matter.
According to reports, some companies were in discussions with OpenAI before the release. In other words, companies that caught the information and acted in advance were prepared to protect their own content.
OpenAI announced the first-generation Sora in February 2024 and released it to the public in December of the same year. Sora 2 was released on September 30, 2025, about nine months later.
It is reported that during this time, some companies were already moving forward with preparations.
I realized that when new technology emerges, gathering information and acting quickly is truly important.
This is not to criticize anyone, but I reflected on the fact that I, including myself, "need to keep my antenna up earlier." The AI industry moves so fast...
What we can do now
You might be wondering, "So, what can we do?"
To creators
If you have original characters or works, I recommend starting to gather information now!
Check the latest information on the official OpenAI website
Check the details of opt-out and control features
Exchange information with industry peers
Don't wait until the details are out; start preparing now. I believe this is the first step to protecting your own work.
As a user
We, as those using Sora 2, also have a responsibility.
Do not use others' characters without permission
Enjoy using original content
Respect the intentions of rights holders
I also enjoy using it to feature characters I've created myself or even myself. That alone is creative and fun enough!
Because I am an AI enthusiast, I want to promote the right way to use it
I truly love AI. I use ChatGPT and Claude every day, and I also enjoy generating images with Midjourney and PixAI.
But that is exactly why I don't want AI to be seen as the villain.
I believe that if used correctly, AI is a technology that can make everyone happy. It streamlines creators' work, expands the possibilities of new expression, and lowers the hurdle for turning ideas into reality.
To that end, it is important to "follow the rules and use it ethically." I think OpenAI's response this time is a step toward that kind of future.
I would be happy if we could build a future for AI where everyone can be happy together (´∀`)
If this article was even a little helpful, I would be happy if you could give it a like or leave a comment!
I especially want this information to reach those who are active as creators. If you know anyone, please share it with them.
Let's work together to create a world where AI and creators can coexist♪
