Book reviews of "Seicho Matsumoto's Showa" by Kiwamu Sato and Takeshi Shiota / Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Nishinippon Shimbun, Kodansha Gendai Shinsho
Regarding the book reviews of "Seicho Matsumoto's Showa" that I received from Kiwamu Sato and Takeshi Shiota, I would like to introduce them again, as they were wonderful reviews from two people of the same generation who deeply respect Seicho Matsumoto.
Kiwamu Sato contributed a review of "Seicho Matsumoto's Showa" to the Nishinippon Shimbun (March 14, 2026). The following sentence particularly impressed me.
The magnitude of Seicho's presence is deeply ingrained in me. Even if asked, I could never write a book like this.
It was through this book that I first learned of the scenes witnessed by Seicho Matsumoto, who spent his impoverished childhood in Kokura. <Omitted>
The childhood of the "national writer" that this book sheds light on conveys to the reader a deep sadness and beauty that transcends being a local memory of the Showa era, feeling like the lost original landscape of Japan itself.
The author states, "His life was more dramatic than any work he wrote." That may indeed be true. However, one could also put it this way: based on vast amounts of material, with cold-eyed observational skills, and condensing the humanity and pathos that flowed through the Showa era, this book itself, while being a biography of Seicho, resembles a novel written by Seicho. In any case, this book is fascinating. Seicho Matsumoto is here.
It was an excellent piece, characteristic of Kiwamu Sato, who knows Seicho Matsumoto's style inside and out. Reading it, I felt a thrill, as if I had been hit by a high-angle suplex. I am very happy and encouraged to have received such high praise. It was a review like a capture. Thank you!
西日本新聞に書評を寄稿した『松本清張の昭和』。その著者である酒井信さんがまさかのコアチョコ&プロレスファンだったとは。それにしても本当に面白い新書でした。 https://t.co/uLTGmE9GWH

Takeshi Shiota contributed a review of "Seicho Matsumoto's Showa" to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun (February 7, 2026). The following sentence particularly impressed me.
By analyzing vast amounts of material, updating key episodes, and layering precise considerations, the author has brilliantly captured the true image of "Seicho Matsumoto the human," who freely traversed between fiction and reality, the present and the past. This will surely be a valuable volume not only for beginners but also for seasoned fans. <Omitted>
The work is also meticulous in terms of numbers, such as converting any monetary amounts mentioned in the text into modern values and providing tables summarizing the circulation of Kappa Novels and Shincho Bunko.
The author's keen insight that "Seicho considered things like the 'human karma' depicted in social mystery novels to be the source that moves Japanese politics and history" made me straighten my back as a novelist.
It was an excellent review, characteristic of Takeshi Shiota, a leading figure in contemporary Japanese social mystery, and I was moved by how he captured the structure of the work with detailed and sharp prose. In expressions like "updating key episodes" and "meticulous in terms of numbers," I felt the "professional work" of a writer of social mysteries.
I was extremely happy to receive reviews for "Seicho Matsumoto's Showa" from Kiwamu Sato and Takeshi Shiota. Receiving such high praise from two people of the same generation who know Seicho Matsumoto deeply made me feel glad that I have been doing literary criticism. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
