Episode 1
The Encounter
One day, a new family member arrived at my house.
A large, shaggy cat that looked like a dirty rag.
That was a conversation we had at my house about a month ago.
I had casually said, "I'd like to keep a cat," in front of my mom and dad.
What I had imagined was a white, fluffy kitten.
But my dad said things like, "Kittens are hard to take care of," and tried to adopt a rescue cat from an organization that protects stray cats.
At that point, I lost interest in cats.
Just then, by chance, a stray cat came into our garden.
A huge old cat that looked like a raccoon dog.
I watched that dirty stray cat through the window.
When my mom started feeding the cat, the next day, and the day after that, at the same time,
it came to get food.
Then my mom said,
"I've wanted to keep a long-haired cat since I was little."
The stray cat rubbed against my mom, and shamelessly, it had completely won her over.
Apparently, that shaggy coat was a "long-haired breed."
Before long, even my dad started saying,
"Tabby patterns are very friendly and smart."
My dad taught me that that dirty, rag-like color was a "tabby pattern."
Then the two of them checked with the local government to make sure the cat didn't belong to anyone—and it was confirmed to be a stray.
The stray cat was taken to a veterinary clinic, where it had tests, parasite removal, and vaccinations. Apparently.
They even had it shampooed at a place called a pet salon, and finally, it even came inside our house.
I opposed it in my heart.
Because it's too big. And it's old.
A shaggy rag had come into the house. So, my first impression was the absolute worst.
……But.
The giant rag cat, back from the salon, saw me and swung its shaggy tail back and forth.
And contrary to its appearance, it meowed in a thin, kitten-like voice and rubbed against me.
For a moment, I got goosebumps in my brain.
Because a cat.
A cat.
Walking toward me.
It was the first time in my life.
Because, not just cats. I had never been liked by an animal before.
Half-doubting, I gently stroked the throat of the rag-patterned cat.
The shaggy fur was fluffier than I could have imagined,
—and I was instantly captivated by him.
My dad named him "Nyango."
After a while, my mom gave him a weird nickname, calling him "Nyangostar" because he was as cute as an idol.
It didn't mean "cute as a star." It seemed to mean "popular like an idol."
Lame.
I almost said, "What era is this?"
Since everyone was calling him whatever they liked, I decided to call him "Nyango-kun" too.
Because Nyango-kun had a magnificent, fluffy mane like a lion, and was bigger and more dignified than any other cat.
And above all, Nyango-kun was older than me. Dad said if you compared him to a human, he was an old man.
So, with my own respect, I added "-kun" to his name.
Nyango-kun became my first friend.

My parents' room is on the second floor, and my room is on the first floor.
I don't mean to brag, but it's the largest room in my house.
Maybe that's why, but it was decided that a cat tower for Nyango-kun's exercise would be installed in my room.
The cat tower even has a hammock-like bed.
I didn't feel anything in particular about Nyango-kun's nest and playground being forced into my room.
I didn't feel any "human-like emotions"—like being happy, hating it, or being annoyed—about either.
However, after the cat tower was installed, my feelings changed little by little.
"I'm glad the cat tower is in my room!"
I started to think that.
It was a very strange feeling.
Nyango-kun wakes up at the same time the birds start singing.
And after skillfully prying open my room door, he goes upstairs to wake up my mom and the others.
He knows he won't get breakfast from me.
After finishing breakfast in the kitchen, Nyango-kun returns to my room.
He diligently rubs his fluffy, jet-black front paws against the door that my mom closed so I wouldn't wake up, as if begging, "Open it for me."
I, being noisily urged, reluctantly get out of bed and open the door.
Then, as if to say "Good morning," Nyango-kun rubs against my feet while meowing in a high-pitched, kitten-like voice that you wouldn't expect from an old cat, using his throat skillfully.
His daily routine has become a set rule.
It's his morning greeting while carrying out the mission of waking me up, as I never get out of bed.
After that, Nyango-kun climbs the cat tower and shows off his acrobatic skills, which are excellent.
Again, it's an incredible athletic ability that you wouldn't expect from an old cat.
Just when I think he's climbed to the top of the tower in an instant and performed his specialty "Nyango Pole Dance," he jumps from the highest point of the cat tower and lands.
If you compare it to a human, it's like jumping off a three-story building and landing.
For Nyango-kun, I guess it's just light post-meal exercise.
After a while, Nyango-kun does his first poop of the morning. I clean up the stuff and carry it to the kitchen trash can.
Because if I leave it, my room will smell, so I have no choice.
I was very resistant to cleaning up Nyango-kun's poop at first, but now I'm used to it.
When I return to my room after finishing my late breakfast, Nyango-kun is looking down at me from the highest position of the cat tower, narrowing his upturned, cold eyes.
When I look up, Nyango-kun turns his face away so he doesn't meet my eyes and yawns.
He's pretending not to know me, even though I cleaned up that smelly poop.
At first, I didn't understand why he acted like that.
But after my mom told me, "Isn't he embarrassed?", it made sense.
Nyango-kun was a shy person, just like me.
I also pretend not to notice and get back into bed, pretending to sleep.
After a while, Nyango-kun comes down from the cat tower without a sound, curls up quietly at my feet, and starts to sleep.
Nyango-kun, a long-haired breed, has a tail that is long and fluffy like a raccoon dog's tail.
But if you look closely, the tip is bent at one point, and my mom taught me, "It's a hooked tail."
Interestingly, when Nyango-kun is really sleeping, the tip of his tail doesn't move.
But when he's faking sleep, he moves the bent, hooked part moodily.
It seems cats pretend to sleep just like we do.
I quietly get up and gently stroke Nyango-kun, who is faking sleep.
If you look closely at Nyango-kun's sleeping face, the bridge of his nose, under his eyes, and the fuzzy part under his nose are reddish-brown, like a flushed drunkard.
When I groom Nyango-kun's whiskers along the grain, he always purrs comfortably.
My mom said, "Cats purr when they're happy."
Hmm, I see. Is Nyango-kun happy to sleep with me on my futon?
Today, too, on my futon,
Nyango-kun is there.
In my room,
Nyango-kun is there.
I had always been all alone every day in this unnecessarily large room.
So, I was really, really happy that I had a companion to stay home with.
I didn't know at the time that this encounter would turn my life upside down.
