What is Toner? ~Trying Skincare for 3 Months~
After passing my 40s, my face started to get oily, so I would scrub it hard in the bath. Until recently, I used soap about five times. I felt gross unless I washed it until it squeaked.
So, do you want to hear what happened to me after I started maintaining my skin (skincare) with toner for three months?
Scrubbing your face is absolutely forbidden!
Apparently, you shouldn't scrub your face, but I think the honest opinion of an 'average guy in his 50s' is, 'Well, what am I supposed to do then?'
Actually, since January of this year, a makeover project to make me (Kawahara) look cool has been underway, and I've been receiving guidance from my hairstylist. They said, 'Please wash your face gently with a lathered foam. Don't scrub it!' That was a difficult challenge right from the start.
Washing your face too much accelerates oiliness
It seems that if you wash your face too much, the oil on the surface of your skin disappears, and sebum secretion becomes even more active. It's like your skin thinks, 'There's not enough oil, I've got to work harder!'
Scrubbing your face -> Surface of the face dries out -> Decides that an oil film is needed to prevent moisture evaporation! -> Sebum secretion command is issued -> Sebum secretion becomes active -> Face gets greasy -> Scrub your face even more (vicious cycle)
That is apparently anegative spiral.
Conversely, if your face is sufficiently moisturized, excess sebum is unnecessary. It won't get oily anymore.
The delicate balance of moisture and oil—the skin environment is truly sensitive, isn't it?
So scrubbing was actually counterproductive...
You're probably wondering, 'Is there an essential way to deal with this?'
The foundation of skin maintenance is 'moisturizing'
People who are concerned about oiliness lack moisture in their skin.
In other words, the fundamental solution is 'moisturizing'!
For that purpose, I was told to use 'toner' and 'emulsion'.
Huh?? Where do you even buy toner?
In the end, it's just 'water,' right?
This is something I seriously asked. Even if I go to a cosmetics shop or a drugstore, there are so many that I don't know which one is good.
When I googled it a bit, I found some that were ridiculously expensive. I'm at the level of having the simple question, 'What is in toner besides water, and how are they different?', so I'm at a loss.
Why are there so many types, and why are they so insanely expensive???
I was recommended 'MUJI' toner and emulsion as an introductory set
When I gave off a confused middle-aged guy aura, I was recommended, 'MUJI products are fine too. They're cheap, so you can use them generously. For starters, isn't that good?'

I limited face washing to twice a day. What were the results?
So, I'm still using soap for face washing, but I've limited it to twice a day. I lather it up gently and rinse it off quickly.
After a bath, I quickly protect my skin with toner. If the feeling of tightness goes away, that's fine.
Before going to bed or going out, I also apply milky lotion for protection. Since it feels a bit sticky inside the house, I use a small amount of milky lotion. Is this the right way to do it?
After about a month, I stopped feeling stickiness on my face.
My expectations grew, thinking, "Oh, can even an old guy get smooth skin?"
In 3 months, I got supple skin!
By about the third month, even after washing my face, there was no feeling of dryness, and my skin became supple. It's embarrassing to say it myself, but... lol
So, by splashing on toner and working hard on moisturizing, I got supple skin in 3 months. My hairdresser praised me, saying, "It's wonderful that you are continuing your skincare!"
For me personally, the direct benefit was that the stickiness disappeared. The fact that my skin environment is returning from abnormal to normal, and that I have more topics to talk about, are effects beyond my expectations.
You can improve your skin environment at any age. I think the change is even greater for those who haven't cared about it at all until now.
Will I continue this in the future? Stay tuned!
