Vertical Writing in Word, Page Order from Right to Left: Troubleshooting with Arabic! Countermeasures Edition
For a certain project, I had to create a vertical document in Word,
and I've been struggling with Word settings since last night (lol).
Although I was able to set up vertical writing easily,
the page order remained "left to right."
I thought, "This is strange for Japanese, isn't it?"
but I couldn't find a menu to change this in the layout settings.
So, I tried Googling it...
Install Arabic!?
When I googled it, I found pages introducing various procedures.
For some reason I don't understand,
everyone is installing "Arabic."
I tried doing it as instructed...
The installation took a while, and Word restarted...
All the menus turned into Arabic!!
After restarting, all the Word menus were in Arabic (probably).
The menu order was also from right to left.
Even the window control buttons moved to the left—it was that thorough.
No way, what am I supposed to do from here!?
That was the feeling.
At this point, it was past midnight.
I searched for a way to fix it, but the methods were getting increasingly complex.
On top of that, my eyes were tired, and I couldn't make any progress.
You shouldn't try to configure difficult settings in the middle of the night, right?
That's it, I'll ask ChatGPT!
The next morning, I thought,
"I'll ask ChatGPT!"
When you have trouble, forgetting about it for a while!
is also an important piece of know-how.
Waking up is the moment when ideas are born (lol).
ChatGPT's knowledge is somewhat vague,
sometimes the menus it points to don't exist,
or it contradicts its previous instructions,
so it can be a bit unreliable,
but I managed to restore the Japanese menu!!
While I was at it, I also had it teach me the procedure for changing the page display order.
In the end, it was solved quickly through the options settings!

Options → Advanced → Show document content → Show document
and select "Right to left"
Problem solved!
I'm so relieved, yay!
There was valuable information on note as well!
Come to think of it, I wondered if there were other people on note who had experienced similar trouble, so
I tried searching on note, and there it was!
I searched on note a little, and found it!
The Word version was the same as mine, and the sample screenshots were very easy to understand.
Is searching on note better than just Googling!?
I thought I should have searched note sooner, and I reaffirmed that note can be used as a valuable source of information in the future.
Don't try difficult settings late at night.
If it doesn't work, go to sleep!
ChatGPT and note helped me out!
So, I learned a lot.
(The end)
