You should just read the books you want to read, in the way you like...
Books explaining how to read have
been catching my eye lately
I read books slowly
I'm not making use of the content of the books I've read
I'm not sure what kind of books I should read
I often hear such concerns
Today, I'm introducing a book on reading that clears up
misconceptions surrounding such books
You should just read more freely and as you please...
It feels like it's speaking for my own feelings (lol)
A Reading Introduction for Modern People by Atsushi Innami
A Reading Introduction for Modern People by Atsushi Innami
~ What does it mean to read a book? ~
I will quote from this book review and add some thoughts
Remembering when I was 13
When you were around 13, haven't you ever heard a type of music you didn't know before and felt unconditionally that it was 'great' in a fresh way? It is a very important timing for nurturing your sensibilities. It is no exaggeration to say that it is the period in your life when your senses are most sharpened.
I sometimes conduct workshops where I have people recall what they were obsessed with around the age of 10 to explore their core through the original experience of curiosity
Around 10 to 13 years old, a sensitive period, isn't it?
Things you were so immersed in that you forgot the time
There must surely be some!
The starting point of reading is curiosity
After all, since it is reading for your own sake, there is no reason for others to criticize you.
Besides, what is truly important is not the 'correct way to read' or 'consistency,' but 'curiosity'.
Only by having curiosity, thinking 'this looks interesting,' and encountering various works in an innocent state can you absorb various essences.
In any case, things you get so immersed in that you forget the time
are where your own curiosity is directed
If you have curiosity, you can do anything!
Reading is like that too
That is why I think you should only read the books you feel like reading, and
it is perfectly fine to leave the books you don't want to read in a pile
.
Whether or not you can be innocent is the turning point.
Since people who are 30, 40, or 80 years old all had a time when they were 13, it is a matter of whether you can have the agency to try and remember those days.
Once you understand the point,
people divide into those who can do it honestly and those who cannot.
This is also your own judgment, so I can only say
please choose whichever you prefer.
Correcting the master-servant relationship with books
Whenever I see people struggling because they cannot read books, I sometimes feel that they are "caught up in a master-servant relationship with books." In other words, because they think of books as something too noble, they unknowingly end up in a state like a "slave to books".
This is exactly a part of what I explain in my speed reading seminars.
Because you mistakenly think that books are superior to you,
you get stuck in a rut,
thinking you have to read every book and read them properly.
If you think that you are the superior one,
you will be able to read more freely and as you please.
Read freely, regain your true self
Instead of losing possibilities by overthinking,
build an ideal relationship with books.
Conversely, if you cannot bring your reading closer to your ideal, your complex may grow larger than necessary. That is, in short, the state of being a "slave to books". However, it is not the book, but you, who decides whether something is good or bad, or whether you like it or dislike it.
Accept yourself as you are now.If you do that, your relationship with books should also become better, and reading should become more enjoyable.
Accept yourself as you are.
Isn't it fine to be free and easy-going, at least when you are reading?
Let's not overthink things and just take it easy!
Books will patiently wait for that moment.
