Reading 'Making Things Roughly' stirs the blood of a maker-geek boy
Today, I'd like to introduce a book that stirs the blood of a maker-geek boy
about the essence of making things.
'Making Things Roughly' by Daiki Ishikawa / Gyalden / Marina Fujiwara
~A shortcut collection for making things you like with electronics~
A device that does something when you touch it a little.
It's a book themed around electronic devices, or rather,
electronic crafting.
I used to make things like radios in the past, but
the current trend seems to be 'movement'.movement' I guess.
Input (sensors, switches) → Microcontroller → Output (motors, displays, etc.)
Things that stimulate the tactile sense, like something that moves significantly
with just a little input or operation, are interesting.
Various sensors
Light sensor
Flex sensor
Distance sensor
Standard switch
-
A slightly unusual switch
Reed switch that works with magnets
Tilt switch that works when tilted
Indeed, the input systems are also quite varied.
Microcontrollers have become cheap and high-performance.
For the processing system, you can do it quickly with a microcontroller.
In the past, I used to assemble circuits, but
now you can get general-purpose microcontroller boards for a few thousand yen.
Arduino and software development
Even when it comes to software development, if you start by
tweaking sample code a little, the hurdle seems low.
For software too, it's important to just try touching it for now.
Various types of output
Combining motors and gears,
attaching workpieces to them,
and making various things move
It feels like an electronic version of Pythagoras Switch lol
Besides that
LCD displays
LEDs
speakers
buzzers
and so on, it reminds me that there are various outputs available
as well
For now, I'll start with a rough sketch
Before thinking about how to make it,
what to make is what's important
The stage of delusion to conception
I'll try sketching out the ideas that popped into my head by hand for now
Rough sketches, turning them into drawings -> moving your hands, trying to make it
—that kind of casual, go-with-the-flow attitude is important
We live in an era where you can easily outsource circuit board production!
This book emphasizes making things roughly with jumper wires without creating a circuit board,
but when I looked into it a bit, making circuit boards has become super easy!!
Like being able to order from $2
I guess I don't have to do my own lettering or worry about disposing of etching solution anymore
I deeply feel that it's that kind of era now
Akihabara parts stores
Online shopping
AliExpress (Aliex)
Even here, Amazon dominates lol
Disassembly and debugging are the essence of making things
Before making things, there is 'disassembly'
My own formative experience also started with 'disassembly'
If you disassemble it, you understand the internal structure
The first step is knowing that there are still many things you don't understand
Such memories come flooding back
The real work begins after you say, 'It won't work!' (Debugging is super important)
A geek boy gets excited during the debugging phase
From a state of not working,
you dive in, convinced it will definitely work
Naturally, it works
a sense of accomplishment and a sense of loss
I suppose it's just a cycle of that
When you look at 100-yen shops from the perspective of taking things apart, there's a treasure trove of goodies lol
When you browse a 100-yen shop,
you find quite sophisticated things sold for 100 yen
If you look at them with the intention of taking them apart for parts,
there are many delicious finds
I've also gotten four LR41 button batteries before (lol)
100-yen shop electronics
100-yen shop parts
100-yen shop components
and so on, you'll find all sorts of things when you search
Beware of the 'XX Police'!
When you post about your electronics projects on social media,
you might get warned by people who act like the 'XX Police'
electronics police
technical standards police
and so on, you'll find them if you search
This is proof that the market has matured
In a sense, it might be a state of saturation
Well, it's a common scene in the internet age
Even the people who warn you,
do so out of an impulse of not being able to turn a blind eye to dangerous things
Let's cherish feelings of respect
and try to communicate well

They are interesting people, so let me introduce them a little

So,
although it has nothing to do with my main business,
I feel like I've caught a glimpse of a
maniac world that supports the foundation of manufacturing
For now, I'll make a note of it,
and since I feel like there will come a time when I can use this kind of material somewhere else,
I'll let these thoughts mature (lol)
See you later~
