The author is not a brain scientist, but an expert in neurophysiology.
However, he has written many books about the brain.
I didn't really understand the difference between brain science and neurophysiology, so I asked ChatGPT.
Brain Science: A field of study that researches the structure and function of the entire brain, or the workings of the mind and behavior that emerge as a result, from a broad perspective.
Neurophysiology: A field of study that elucidates the more specific and detailed mechanisms of how the cells that make up the brain and nervous system transmit information.
In this way, brain science explores the workings of the brain from a large perspective as a field, while
neurophysiology focuses on the fine details within that, namely the workings of nerve cells is the difference.
I suppose it's the difference between looking at things from a macro perspective versus a micro one.
The first half had a lot of general theory and was boring, but it gets interesting halfway through.
AI's ability to be supportive and empathetic is phenomenal!
I feel like there are more posts on note about being healed by AI or having AI listen to complaints...
than there used to be.
AI will listen carefully even to nonsensical stories, and
it handles unreasonable requests smoothly.
And on top of that, it never gets angry.
When this thorough ability to be supportive is compared to humans,
humans have no chance of winning (lol).
Looking at it from a different angle,
it teaches us essential things that humans lack.
It becomes a trigger to realize one's own shortcomings.
I was surprisingly convinced, thinking, "I never thought of it that way."
AI that trains your ability to verbalize
The quality of image-generating AI output is determined by the instructions you input
If the result is different from your image, it is a problem with your own verbalization skills
There is much to be learned from the realization that this is how it is conveyed to the other party
If you leave everything to AI, you will lose your individuality
Writing research papers using AI is becoming the norm.
However, there is a strong warning against leaving it entirely to AI or copy-pasting.
In the short term, you might feel like you have written a good paper, but
others will soon catch up, and you will be buried in the average.
In the end, such work will not be evaluated.
Even on note, I see articles that look like they were just copied and pasted from generative AI.
It is a case of wishing they would use it a bit more skillfully.
Using AI with ingenuity might be the individuality of the AI era.
A world where AI surpasses humans
Even before the so-called singularity, there
seem to be various turning points.
When AI starts automatically generating papers, papers will be mass-produced and
far exceed the amount humans can read.
We will come to rely on AI to read and scrutinize papers as well.
Eventually, AI will be giving presentations at academic conferences lol.
The speed of research development is so fast that humans cannot keep up.
If AI is presenting and AI is listening, the conferences themselves will change form and move online.
It sounds like science fiction, but it is a plausible story.
It gives me a bit of a shiver.
Can embodiment be acquired from language!?
There are many arguments that there are areas that AI without a body cannot reach, such as the mind, emotions, and consciousness, but here, the question is asked from a slightly different angle.
The story of how people born with visual impairments acquire
visual concepts like "transparency" or "seeing through things" through conversation.
Using language to imagine a scene—this process does not necessarily require an experience involving physical embodiment.
Ultimately, it means that by feeding a massive amount of text into an AI, the experiences embedded within that text are reproduced as simulated experiences, serving as learning material.
In other words, the author takes the position that one cannot deny the possibility that an AI without physical embodiment could possess things like emotion or consciousness, which are thought to be strongly related to embodiment.
The development of this logic is a bit too fast for me to fully digest yet, but it is an interesting and unexpected perspective that has broadened my horizons.
