The Dragon in My Heart
Oh, hey there. ...Huh? Who am I, you ask?
I'm the dragon who lives inside the heart of Monaka Soramame, the owner of this note. Nice to meet you.
Huh? You're thinking, "In your heart? A dragon?"
Yeah, yeah, I'm about to explain it. Just listen, okay!
Let's see, first, I should probably talk about how Soramame-chi and I met... no, more accurately, the time Soramame-chi realized I existed.
It was back when Soramame-chi was still in high school. A prep school teacher started introducing us on a whim. Maybe they saw us in a picture book or something.
"We all have a dragon living inside our hearts. It's asleep, but if you raise it properly, it'll wake up someday. I just thought that was a nice idea."
"Living inside"... what a terrible thing to say. Humans always think they're the masters... oh, keep that between us.
I wonder how many of those high schoolers from back then still remember us...
It seems like Soramame-chi learned about us for the first time from that teacher's story. Ever since then, I was thinking, "Oh, wow, they're really aware of me!" Hehe.
I remember they happily wrote about me in the "favorite quote" section of their graduation album, too. With a portrait. It didn't look much like me and was pretty embarrassing, so I really didn't like that part.
What do you think after hearing all that?
Oh, you're wondering if I'm awake? Well, I'm talking to you right now, so I'm definitely awake!
But man, Soramame-chi is bad at waking me up. Maybe this is just me talking in my sleep... zz...
...Ah! The rest of the story, right, right.
I think Soramame-chi might have been unconsciously sensing my presence even before hearing that teacher's story. Maybe that's why they didn't just brush it off and actually remembered it.
Even after realizing I existed, they would hint at us in the lyrics of the songs they wrote. I was like, "Wow, you really love me, don't you!" It made me happy.
But, I think it's been about 10 years since then, right? Until I finally woke up. Man, I sure slept for a long time. *Yawn*.
Well, some people are better at waking us up than others, so it can't be helped. Soramame-chi has started waking me up every now and then lately.
I guess they might be thinking they want to help wake up my friends now. They look happy whenever they're working and see one of my friends about to wake up. Or maybe not, I don't know.
I remember having one eye open and watching at that exact moment, too.
Maybe I'll wake up fully if I eat something a bit tastier. I wonder if Soramame-chi could bring me something good.
Until then, I'll just take a little nap.
Oh, that's right. I'm sure you have one of my friends with you, too. Please take care of them as well.
Well then, see you somewhere else.

Afterword by "Dragon's Master" Soramame
The teacher who told me the story about the dragon seems to be a musician, and they had a slightly different vibe from the other teachers. Thinking back on it now, maybe I felt some kind of sympathy for them.
Since it was a story containing metaphorical elements, I interpreted it in my own way and used it for this piece.
By the way, I wonder what the original source of this dragon picture book is. I should have asked the teacher! Since then, no matter how much I search, I can't figure it out... If you happen to know, I would be happy if you could tell me!
