To Us, Who Were Made Into Heroes
RPGs are a microcosm of society, aren't they?
You're told, 'You are a descendant of the hero. Please defeat the Demon King!' and the castle soldiers cheer, 'Long live the hero!'
It's that atmosphere of, 'Please save the world, we need your power.'
And then, you're handed a 'stick,' some 'cloth clothes,' and a mere 500 gold.
Even the cheapest weapon sold in town costs hundreds of gold, doesn't it?
If it were me, I'd refuse.
Because they don't actually have any real expectations, do they?
They think, 'This guy might be a failure,' so they just hand over cheap equipment and then act like they don't know you, right?
If they really wanted you to save the world, wouldn't it make sense to collect money from all over the country, have the best blacksmith forge a sword, and say, 'We're counting on you with this'?
I think society is the same.
They say, 'We have high expectations for you,' while in reality, they don't make much of an initial investment. They only give money to people who have a proven track record of guaranteed returns.
That's not expectation, that's 'certainty,' isn't it?
Companies are the same way.
The president (the King) says,
'We have high expectations for you new employees (heroes). I hear this year's batch is exceptional.'
The employees (the soldiers) also say,
'Good luck! We're counting on you!'
But they hardly give you any know-how or equipment.
What do you mean, telling us to fight a contract (the Demon King) right away?
Families are the same way.
The parents (the King) say,
'We have high expectations for you. Get into a good university and become a proper adult.'
But they send you to the same cram schools and lessons as everyone else. There's nothing special provided.
Isn't it strange to demand different results from other kids while giving you the same things as everyone else?
In the end, expectations are just something people 'toss out' and leave behind.
“You can do it.”
“It’ll be fine.”
──Anyone can say those words.
If you’re going to expect that much, don’t just dump it all on me; you should take some risks and invest in me too.
You leave only words behind, and dump everything else on the 'hero (me)'.
If you do that, I’m going to lose my motivation too.
Even if I work hard and build up my skills, I’ll end up using them 'only for myself'.
After all, I don’t want to repay someone who didn’t support me in the first place.
I’m just like you.
I won’t invest in you.
But, I’ll say it.
“You can do it”──that’s what I’ll say.
