I tried making my own desk.
I'm Momo, a mother of three and a company employee.
I placed a folding desk in the corner of the room next to the living room to create a space just for myself.
It's actually quite nice.
The kitchen used to be my regular spot, but this "personal space" has become a place for me to relax.
How I ended up with my own space
The other day, my children were home while I was working remotely.
No matter how much I explained it to them, they would naturally keep talking to me since they knew I was right there.
I can't maintain my focus very well, so every time I was interrupted, I had to reset.
I would get confused each time, wondering, "Where was I? What was I supposed to do next?"
Because of that, I couldn't work at my usual pace, so as a desperate measure for the next time, I decided to try putting some distance between us.
I set up a folding desk in the corner of the room next to the living room (which is technically a kids' room, though we don't use it much) and worked there.
Since it was a bit tucked away, the children couldn't always see me, which reduced the frequency of them talking to me.
I thought, "This is great!" so I decided to leave it there and use it even when I'm not working.
↑ It's a modest desk like this. (PR)
Benefit of having my own desk #1: I can leave my work out
My usual workspace was the kitchen floor, the top of the induction stove (kids, don't try this at home! lol), or the dining table, so I had to clear everything away whenever I needed to use those spaces for their intended purposes.
Having to put things away and take them out again really lowers efficiency.
Since that's no longer an issue, I can work for longer periods, and because I can leave things out, I'm able to make use of even small pockets of time.
Benefit of having my own desk (2): It becomes a psychological safe base
It's in a corner of the children's room, so it's a completely open space, but just thinking that I have my own space makes me feel like I've created a safe base.
I feel like I can spend my own time while sitting here, and it has become easier to explain this to the children as well.
Mental peace of mind has a major impact on one's daily mental state.
Benefit of having my own desk (3): It creates a sense of balance
Although it overlaps with the benefit in (2), I feel like it has created a clear distinction between my role as "myself" and my role as a "mother."
The feeling that being at my desk is my own time, and leaving this spot is time as a "mother," has emerged, and I feel it serves as a good boundary.
A sense of security stabilizes the mind
Just thinking that I have my own place can provide a sense of psychological security.
Even if my heart is troubled, just knowing that I have a place to return to allows me to regain a certain level of calm.
A great sense of security gained from a small space.
I feel like I've acquired something very good.
I will spend my own time here working or reading, and when I leave this place, I will be a "mother" with all my might.
I would like to enjoy that kind of life.
Thank you very much for reading until the end.
