Charcoal is produced in large quantities from various provinces. Among them, those from Hyuga Province and Kii-Kumano are of good quality. The charcoal from the deep mountains of Ikeda in Banshu is a famous product. Also, the Yokoyama charcoal from Izumi is a famous product. This is branch charcoal. In all cases, they are made by setting up a charcoal |kiln in the mountains.

Charcoal kilns are set up in places where it is convenient to move firewood in and out. In poetry, the charcoal kilns of Ono are mentioned. Ono is in Otagi District, Yamashiro Province.

* "Ono" is Ono-go, Otagi District. It is the area around Yase and Ohara in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City today.
