Birdlime Manufacturing Method

Birdlime Manufacturing Method
The bark of a tree called the Hosoba-tochigi (Ilex rotunda) is scraped off, soaked in pond water, and after a long time, it is taken out and boiled in hot water to make birdlime. This is mentioned in the Honzo Hitsudoku (Essential Reading on Herbalism). This tree is abundant in the mountains of Kumano in Kii Province. The local people gather it, manufacture birdlime, and make it their family business. The leaves of the tree are narrow and soft and green, and its fruit is red, resembling the berries of the heavenly bamboo (Nandina). The trees are beautiful, and they look splendid when used as hedges.
