|Kuya Shonin|
In the spring of the fifth year of |Tenryaku|, a great |epidemic| |spread| extraordinarily throughout the |capital|, and the |corpses| of |people| filled the |streets|. The |sorrow| of the |ten thousand people| was beyond |description|. |Because of this|, |Kuya| |Shonin| was deeply |saddened|, |carved| an eleven-|faced| |statue| himself, |prayed| with |sincere| |devotion|, |placed| the |sacred statue| on a |cart|, and |pulled| it through the |city| to encourage |faith|. As the |towns| he |pulled| it through were immediately |healed|, the |people| deeply |revered| the |miraculous power| of the |Great Compassion|, and eventually |founded| |this temple|, making that |Buddha image| the |main deity|.
* "|Myochiriki|" refers to the superior intellectual power possessed by |Buddhas and Bodhisattvas|.

When the |epidemic| was |spreading|, he had the |sick| |drink| the |medicine| offered to |Kannon|, and there was not a |single person| who did not |recover|. Emperor |Murakami| |heard| of this and had particular |faith| in it. Since he |drank| that |medicine| as an |auspicious custom| every |New Year's Day|, the |people| followed this |example| and called it "|Ofuku|" (Royal Drink), and it is said that they |celebrate| and |use| it to |avoid| the |epidemic| |evils| of the |year|.
* "|Gansan|" refers to New Year's Day, or the first three days of the year.
* "|Ofuku|" refers to |Obukucha| (Great Fortune Tea). It is tea drunk on New Year's Day with pickled plums and Japanese pepper added. Reference: "Dai Nihon Kokugo Jiten Vol. 1 ( Obukucha )" (National Diet Library Digital Collections)
