Reminiscent of Izumo Taisha - Moved to receive an unexpected Goshuin [Chiei Shrine] Chiei, Hidaka Town, Saru District, Hokkaido
I drove over 1,000 kilometers all the way to Hokkaido.

While driving along the road, I found a shrine located below the road level, in a spot I almost missed.

This structure looks like Izumo Taisha, doesn't it?
Like a mini Izumo Taisha.

I wonder if it has any connection to Okuninushi-san of Izumo.
It's small and cute.
I paid my respects right away.

After finishing my prayers, I happened to look next to the offering box...
There was a postcard-style Goshuin.
It was a moving encounter to be able to receive a Goshuin.

A commemorative photo with the Goshuin lol

While taking pictures, I noticed something.
The deities inscribed on the earth god pillar were different from those on Honshu.
In most places on Honshu, the following five deities, who are deeply involved in agriculture and land management, are often inscribed.
Amaterasu Omikami
Ukanomitama no Mikoto (Oinari-san)
Oonamuchi no Mikoto (Another name for Okuninushi no Mikoto, god of land management)
Sukunahikona no Mikoto (God of land management who cooperated with Okuninushi no Mikoto)
Ueyasuhime no Mikoto or Ukanomitama no Mikoto, etc. (varies by region)

However, the ones here were a little different.
Amaterasu is the same, but Ninigi-no-Mikoto is inscribed. Ninigi-no-Mikoto is Amaterasu's grandson who descended to earth. He is the ancestor of the successive emperors.

Onamuchi-no-Mikoto (Onamuchi) is the same, but Ame-no-Oshiho-mimi-no-Mikoto is inscribed. Ame-no-Oshiho-mimi-no-Mikoto is the father of Ninigi-no-Mikoto.

Okuninushi-no-Mikoto is inscribed, but it overlaps with Onamuchi-no-Mikoto. In the early stages of nation-building, he was Onamuchi-no-Mikoto, and after the nation was built, he became Okuninushi-no-Mikoto.
Since he is the 'God of Nation-Building' who carried out the development and management of Japan's land (Ashihara no Nakatsukuni), I feel I can see the desire to strongly link him with the pioneering spirit of the people of Hokkaido.
With Ninigi-no-Mikoto, his father Ame-no-Oshiho-mimi-no-Mikoto, and Amaterasu, three direct descendants are inscribed, suggesting a strong consciousness of the descent of the heavenly grandson.
It is fun to look at the earth deity pillars and let my reasoning and imagination run wild.
It is interesting that the thoughts of the people living in this land are expressed in the gods of the earth deity pillars.
History of Chiei Shrine
Chiei, Hidaka-cho, Saru-gun, Hokkaido
Founding:
It is said that it began in 1910 (Meiji 43) when a small shrine was built around the former Chiei Elementary School as a spiritual anchor for the pioneers of this region.
The Chiei district is one of the places where the foundation for the development of Hidaka-cho was built, and Chiei Shrine has been cherished as the 'guardian deity of the Chiei district'.
Construction and relocation of the main shrine:
When it was relocated to its current location in 1926 (Taisho 15), a master carpenter was invited, and the main shrine was built as a full-scale wooden shrine architecture through the collective efforts of the residents. This is considered the oldest existing building in the Hidaka region.
Later, in 1960 (Showa 35), because it was going to be in the path of the planned Nissho Road construction, it was relocated to its current site about 20 meters away.
Cultural property designation and preservation:
The main shrine was designated as a cultural property of the former Hidaka-cho in 1989 (Heisei 1) as a valuable cultural heritage that conveys the history of development and the hearts of the pioneers to the present day.
Currently, the main shrine is carefully preserved inside a raised-floor preservation facility.
Festivals:
Although it is usually inside the preservation facility, it is said that you can enter it on New Year's Day and during the shrine festival on September 15th.
Chiei Shrine has become a valuable historical building that conveys the harsh history of development in this region.
Wow, it's so interesting to make all these discoveries.
This is why I can't stop traveling.
