Stepping down from the podium to stand before the roaster. 10 days since opening, 450 visitors, and a challenge from '7 people'
It has been 10 days since I opened my BASE shop. During this time, 450 people have visited, and 7 people have actually pressed the order button. For me, having spent 35 years facing children as a teacher at a special needs school, this number '7' feels heavier and more precious than any number I ever encountered on the podium. It was the moment I truly felt the warmth of human connection on the other side of my computer screen.
Among those who purchased from me were former colleagues, people who picked up on my words through social media, and others who, just like me, are currently struggling to take a 'new step forward.' Sometimes, when I stare at the beans in front of the roaster, my hands pause. 'Are these beans more sincere than my lessons were back then?' More than in those days when I prepared repeatedly for better lessons as a teacher, I am now listening with my whole heart and soul to the popping sounds and the aroma of the beans. After all, I am pouring all of my 35 years of 'the power to care for others' into every single bean.
I included a handwritten message for every person who placed an order. The voices that reach me from where the coffee was delivered—saying 'It was delicious' or 'It made me feel warm inside'—each one of those words pushes me forward as I face the roaster. Perhaps I am not just selling coffee beans. I have finally realized that I am delivering a time for people to compose themselves—for my former students, my colleagues, and for anyone else out there who is doing their best.
My next goal is to reach 100 people. Social media strategy, advertising, attracting customers... there are countless questions without clear answers. But just as I believed in and waited for the pace of my former students, I will continue to roast, believing in this 'single bean of a story.'
