学名の属名「Chelidonium」は、ギリシャ語の「χελιδών（khelidōn）」＝ツバメに由来。これは「ツバメが帰ってくる頃に咲く花」という伝承や、ツバメがこの植物の乳液でヒナの目を洗うという伝説に基づく。種小名「majus」はラテン語で「大きい」「偉大な」の意味。

クサノオウは、昔は農民がインキンタムシなどの皮膚疾患への外用（煎液で洗浄、生の汁や焼酎漬けを塗布）に使った薬草だが、強い毒性があり、医療体制の整った現在の日本では、自己判断での利用は推奨されない。内服（飲用）や目に触れると非常に危険。雑草として駆除する場合、ゴム手袋が必須である。

Common English name: Celandine
Scientific name: Chelidonium majus

Japanese name: "Kusa-no-ou" literally means “Yellow of the Grass” / “King of Herbs”. "Kusa" could mean grasses or herbs, or bad smell indicating skin diseases. Meaning of "Ou" varies depending on what Chinese character is assigned for the sound of "ou". If it's assigned "王", "ou" means king, and if "黄" it means yellow. 

“Yellow of the Grass” refers to the yellow or orange sap that exudes when the stem or leaves are cut.

“King of Herbs” or “King of Skin Diseases” comes from its historical use as a medicinal herb, especially for treating skin diseases, and the belief that it is the most effective among medicinal plants.
