[Weekly Short-Short Note] A Stimulant for Love
Mina and Eiji have been dating for five years. Mina is feeling a bit anxious due to her age, but Eiji is laid-back, and their relationship has fallen into a rut.
While walking through town on a Saturday, they found a mysterious shop selling all sorts of strange items. They spotted a sign on the wall that read, "Long-Distance Relationships for Sale."
When they asked the shopkeeper, he explained that it was a stimulant for couples stuck in a rut.
The two decided to try buying this so-called long-distance relationship.
When Mina went to work at the start of the week, she was suddenly told she was being transferred. Moreover, she had to leave for her new post by the beginning of the following week. Mina immediately sent a message to Eiji.
Mina: I've been transferred and have to start at my new post early next week.
Eiji: Huh, seriously?
That's too sudden.
Mina: Yeah. But, well, it's work after all.
Can't be helped, I'm a corporate slave.
After that, Mina spent her days in a flurry of moving and wrapping up her remaining tasks, and she headed to her new post without ever seeing Eiji.
Both Mina and Eiji were busy with work, and for some reason, they couldn't use their smartphones or the internet, leaving only public phones or the landline at Eiji's house as means of communication.
“He says it's work, but maybe he's actually cheating on me.”
“Mina, can't you even make a single phone call?”
Both of them were filled with their own delusions, becoming suspicious and paranoid.
Mina, who finally managed to get some time off, decided to go to Eiji's house without an appointment. When she got off at the nearest station, she saw Eiji with a girl she didn't know. Their eyes met, but Mina instinctively turned around and ran off.
“Wait! It's not what you think!”
“What do you mean it's not what I think! You are cheating on me, aren't you?”
“No, it's not like that, this is my little sister.”
Just then, the girl who was with Eiji called out to her.
“I really am his little sister. I came back home to visit, so he came to pick me up at the station.”
While the three of them were having tea at Eiji's house and watching a TV drama that happened to be on, Eiji's sister giggled and said,
“Hey, this is just like you two. It's kind of funny.”
The TV drama was one of those 'trendy dramas' that were hugely popular from the late Showa to early Heisei era, which focused on the fun of watching men and women miss each other's signals.
“That was too much stimulation for us. We don't need a long-distance relationship anymore, right?”
Mina and Eiji looked at each other and gave a wry smile.
