Weekly Short-Short Note: Cattle Illumination

“What is the meaning behind these illuminations?”

The ranch’s illuminations were shaped like cows, about twenty of them, sparkling beautifully. On the way back from a Christmas party, Saito asked the father of his host family. The father, the mother, and their son Justin all looked at each other and fell silent. The car, which had been lively just moments before, went quiet, with only the Christmas songs playing on the car radio echoing cheerfully.

It was the father who broke the silence. He opened his mouth as if he had made up his mind. Perhaps due to nervousness, his voice was terribly raspy.

“It happened about 50 years ago, around Christmas. Something strange occurred at a ranch around here. Many of the cows being raised were found dead with their internal organs completely hollowed out, and even now, the cause remains unknown.”

“Could that possibly be...?”
Justin stopped Saito from saying anything more.
“I can’t say any more than that. These illuminations are for the repose of the cows’ souls.”
The car carrying the four of them drove along the night road where the air was biting cold. Just as they were about to reach home, a flying object emitting a blinding light suddenly headed toward the car—.
