"Mom, I have a boyfriend!" A story of two people connected by the miracle of meeting.
"I have a boyfriend."
A small miracle that began with those words from my daughter.
It started with a connection through my best friend.
Our children eventually grew up and met, in a way that seemed like coincidence but felt like destiny.
Time spent together, connected by friendship and the bond between parent and child.
And then—it quietly taught us that "there is surely a meaning to the people we meet."
It was a warm gift that shone softly in the spring light.
◆ "Mom!! Actually... I have a boyfriend!!"
At those words, my hands almost stopped gripping the steering wheel.
A sudden confession in the car.
I couldn't hide my agitation and started firing questions.
"What! Really!?"
"Who is it!? Since when!?"
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?"
My daughter looked a bit exasperated, but
she smiled, looking somewhat embarrassed.
"Mom, you're too excited! Calm down~ haha"
No, no, there's no way I can calm down.
My daughter having a boyfriend...
As a mother, I thought such a day was still far in the future.
◆ A connection made by meeting my best friend
Spring 2008. The year I started my current job.
A colleague I quickly became friends with was "Nacchan."
We were close in age and hit it off immediately.
Going out for drinks, camping, marathons...
They were fun days.
At that time, Nacchan had a boyfriend from her university days, and the three of us would often hang out.
Eventually, the two of them got married, we both resigned, and went our separate ways.
But we kept in touch a few times a year, reporting on each other's lives, and that relationship continued.
◆ A small miracle connected by two lives
In 2011, Nacchan gave birth to a boy.
Two years later, I gave birth to my eldest daughter.
They were one school year apart.
That is my daughter's current boyfriend—"Glasses-kun."
A boy who looks good in glasses, a bit absent-minded, but bright and kind.
Yes, let's call him "Glasses-kun" here.
◆ A connection that remained deep in our memories
Actually, my daughter and Glasses-kun only met about twice during their childhood.
But neither of them has any memory of that time at all.
Even so, strangely enough—
As time passed, the two met again.
As if it had been "meant to be."
—
We were both busy, and it was hard to go out with our children.
Even so, consulting each other about worries,
exchanging New Year's cards,
going to lunch once every few years,
the relationship between Nacchan and me continued.
◆ Another "place to belong" connected by brass band
And then, December 2022.
Words I heard at a year-end party with Nacchan for the first time in a while would change our destiny significantly.
"Glasses started playing in a brass band."
At those words, my heart felt a little restless.
Because my daughter had also once said, "I want to try it!"
Words my daughter said with a smile after seeing a flyer for a brass band.
But I couldn't respond to that.
It's true, she was terrible at sports.
That said, she couldn't play the piano, nor could she read sheet music.
I thought it was impossible for my beginner daughter to jump into the world of brass band where everyone was experienced.
Besides, I was also anxious about losing my own days off.
So—I ended my daughter's feelings with a single word: "It's impossible."
More than that.
In this closed-off place where she spent time with the same members from nursery school until junior high graduation,
I thought it was better for my daughter to prioritize the time spent with her friends.
That's what I thought.
"You should come see it sometime!"
When I was told that,
"I'd love to go!"
...I replied, but it ended up being just a polite social gesture.
◆ A mother's resolve, moved by a tearful confession
Spring 2023.
My daughter lost her place in her small community after drifting apart from her school friends.
And then, she said these heavy words while crying.
"I don't want to go to school..."
I still cannot forget the sight of my daughter whispering that while in tears.
At that moment, I remembered.
That "I want to try it!" from back then.
That "Come see it sometime!" voice from back then.
And I thought,
"I want to create another place where my daughter can belong."
◆ Another door opened by percussion instruments
I contacted Nacchan right away and went to a trial session for the wind orchestra.
On the day we went to observe,
it seemed they were short on percussionists, so my daughter was immediately invited by many friends.
My daughter, who had been looking anxious, became absorbed in it in no time.
At school, she couldn't show her "true self."
She was always being put down and "lacked confidence in herself."
Now, my daughter is showing a smile within that circle of friends.
Snare drum, suspended cymbal, marimba...
Every time a sound rang out, my daughter's expression grew brighter and brighter.
And from here on out, my daughter would be drawn into the charm of percussion instruments more than anyone could have imagined.
"I want to join!"
My daughter's smile at that moment became an unforgettable treasure for me as well.
My daughter, who was always worried about what others thought at school,
was talking to others and laughing on her own that day.
...Perhaps the "true self" was there all along.
I was simply captivated by that smile.
To think that the future I had dismissed as "impossible" back then could look so bright.
◆ The relationship the two spun with smiles
Glasses-kun is always the mood maker!
At school, he's the "comedy act."
He's always performing his own original skits,
and he doesn't mind at all if they flop.
On the other hand, he is a very kind-hearted boy who looks out for kids who can't join the conversation.
He was a popular kid loved by both children and adults.
Since they were in the same percussion section, the two became friends right away.
They bonded over anime and comedians, and there was never a shortage of laughter.
Other parents would even ask,
"Have they been playing together since they were little?" because they were so close.
When my daughter was feeling down because something bad happened at school,
"I mess up every single day!" he would say, sharing some silly joke.
He always made my daughter laugh and cheered her up with his jokes.
…Before I knew it, he was always there, naturally and gently,
staying by my daughter's side.
And we adults were vaguely aware of those faint feelings of love from Glasses-kun.
◆ The answer my daughter found after days of worry
March 2024.
Just before Glasses-kun was set to graduate from the team.
My daughter said,
"Mom, Glasses-kun confessed to me today...!"
She looked more confused than happy.
"I don't know what it means to go out with someone."
"I like him the best as a friend, but..."
It seemed she didn't understand the feeling of "liking someone as more than a friend."
"What's the difference between that and being 'friends'??"
She asked me for advice many times, but that's not my strong suit.
Honestly, I didn't know how to answer her.
But—above all, that's not something you can figure out with logic.
I'm happy she comes to me for advice, but—
I realized painfully that "all a parent can do is watch over them from the sidelines."
Her friends around her were egging her on, saying, "You should give him an answer soon!"
My daughter worried about it for days in her own way.
And the answer she came to was—
"I want to stay friends."
And with that, Glasses-kun graduated from the team.
◆ A "reunion of feelings" a year later
Even after that, the two of them would occasionally exchange messages on LINE.
Even though they would see each other at brass band events, there was no real progress.
But I noticed that my daughter seemed a little lonely.
The time they spent apart might have been what made her realize her own feelings.
And Glasses-kun, too—he had been thinking about her the whole time.
◆ The miracle of a reunion brought by timing
April 2025.
My daughter changed her environment and entered the same junior high school as Glasses-kun.
Of course, she joined the brass band club.
"My class is fun! The club is fun too!!"
"I'm so glad I came to this school!!"
The student body was six times larger than her elementary school.
A new environment, new friends.
As her world expanded, her perspective and heart changed too.
Then one day, on the way back from watching a movie,
Glasses-kun confessed for the second time.
This time, my daughter didn't hesitate.
"…Yeah, let's go out!"
◆ "Nothing changes even if we're a couple"—that's the shape of their relationship
The two of them became a couple.
But nothing has changed from before.
They just see each other in the hallway sometimes to say "bye," or talk a little bit at club activities.
They only message on LINE about once every ten days.
But that might just be the perfect distance for the two of them right now.
"You should take a photo booth picture."
"You should hold hands."
No matter how much people around them get excited, it doesn't matter.
They have their own pace.
—
When I heard she had a boyfriend, I couldn't stop grinning myself.
“Why didn't you tell me sooner?”
I asked with a laugh, and
“Because it’s embarrassing, isn't it??”
Looking at my daughter’s profile as she laughed,
I felt something... deep in my chest, suddenly grow warm.
…I think if anyone in an oncoming car had seen us, they would have thought we were a creepily grinning parent and child. Haha
But behind that smile, many feelings were welling up inside me.
Gratitude toward the glasses-wearing boy who cared for my daughter so sincerely.
The clear growth of my daughter, who had discovered the feeling of “liking someone.”
And, the slight anxiety and loneliness I felt as a parent.
Even so—
Including all those feelings, I just wanted to support their growth with all my heart.
◆ “Now” is a miracle gifted from the past
If I hadn't met Nacchan that day—
my daughter might never have met the brass band, or the glasses-wearing boy.
She might not have connected with the person who reached out to her when she was struggling to find her place.
But that meeting truly led to “now.”
I believe that the connections we adults make eventually connect our children,
and that small coincidences quietly move the future.
People are connected by invisible threads.
Those threads grow slowly over time.
And this moment called “now”
is perhaps a small miracle
that the meetings of the past
have slowly, over time,
delivered to us.—
In the future, the two of them might walk different paths.
But that is okay.
The time they spent laughing together,
the days they spent close to one another,
will surely remain in their hearts.
Just as it was for us—
I am sure they will grow into adults, carrying those feelings in their hearts.
And someday,
if they could become people with the kindness
to gently embrace someone else's heart.
No matter what kind of relationship they end up in,
I hope they cherish the miracle of “now.”
Surely, that memory will continue to shine in their hearts forever.
