Watching Social Media from a Glass-Walled Room
I used to have Twitter open all the time.
100 posts every day.
There were days when I would post 100 times just in the morning,
so I think I was posting 200 to 300 times a day.
If I thought of something, I would post it immediately.
It felt like I was breathing inside Twitter.
I felt restless if I didn't post.
I felt suffocated if I stepped away from the timeline.
There was certainly a time like that.
But I am quite different now.
When I rewrite a blog post.
When I update YouTube.
When I write a note.
I only post to announce those things.
I rarely tweet from 'good morning' to 'good night' like I used to.
At first, I was a little anxious.
Should I be posting more?
Should I be interacting more?
Will I be forgotten if I stay like this?
I thought about things like that many times.
But if I were to describe my current feeling with the closest words,
it might be 'being in a glass-walled room'.
There are many people outside.
Everyone is chatting happily, and the flow is fast.
I am quietly watching that scenery from inside the room.
Occasionally, someone I know passes by,
opens the door, and talks to me.
We talk for a bit, and then it becomes quiet again.
I used to be on the outside all the time.
I was talking to someone and was always in the timeline.
But now, this place with a little distance feels comfortable.
It's not that I've come to hate social media.
In fact, I still like it.
But sitting in this quiet room,
and only reaching out when necessary,
is just right for me now.
I think that the distance you keep from social media
doesn't have to stay the same forever.
