Bookmarks of Scent and Memory | Amulet Encyclopedia
Sometimes, a scent drifting by in a fleeting moment quietly knocks on the door of distant memories.
In our daily lives, there are many memories of "scents" that are deeply etched into our hearts, even without us being conscious of them.
What the Proust Effect Teaches Us
The phenomenon where a specific scent triggers the vivid recollection of memories and emotions from the past is called the "Proust effect." It originates from a scene in Marcel Proust's novel 'In Search of Lost Time,' where the protagonist awakens memories of his childhood through the scent of a madeleine dipped in tea.
It is said that the sense of smell is the only one of the five senses that transmits directly to the parts of the brain that govern emotion and memory. Because of this, it is characterized by working on our emotions more strongly than other senses. A favorite scent may be inextricably linked to warm, joyful memories, and at times, bitter memories may also be tied to a specific smell.
Scent as a Silent Language
Scent is also described as a "silent language." It is a powerful trigger that can instantly change the atmosphere of a place or the state of one's heart without the need for words.
Using aromatherapy, perfume, or incense to compose one's mind is a very rational act for tuning oneself to the "here and now" amidst busy days. Knowing the scents that feel comfortable and fit you well can be a small, yet certain piece of wisdom for keeping yourself in a good mood.
Wearing Memories, Your Own Personal "Amulet"
I myself enjoy indulging in the scents of aromatherapy and incense.
What I treasure is an aroma oil that a friend blended for me. When I want to lift my spirits a little, I gently dab it on my neck or wrists, and I feel as though that scent becomes a quiet shield that supports my heart.
Also, in fleeting moments, I sometimes sense the presence of a loved one in a scent. While there is no scientific basis for it, it feels as if it were a sign that the other person is thinking of me.
The Scent That Surrounds You Now
Invisible scents accompany our daily lives as intangible "amulets."
The smell of someone you love, your favorite aroma, or perhaps the scent of the earth after the rain. These are all precious pieces that color the encyclopedia of your life.
What kind of scent is drifting around you right now?
I hope that scent becomes a gentle bookmark of memory for you.
