The Gentle and Strong Amulet of Not Expecting Anything | Amulet Encyclopedia
"I don't have expectations of people."
When I say that, sometimes people look sad or tell me, "That's cold." But for me, these words are never meant to push anyone away. Rather, they are like a "default armor" that keeps me healthy and allows me to respect others.
Expectation is "Control," Hope is "Trust"
Instead of having expectations, there are three things I value.
Fully understanding the person's character
Never giving up on "hope"
Giving my all to meet the expectations others have of me
Expectations like "they should do this for me" or "they ought to be this way" can, in reverse, lead to "ego" or "control," where you want to make the other person act exactly as you wish.
But the other person is not me.
If there are 100 people, there are 100 versions of "normal" and 100 versions of "justice." Lamenting that they don't do what I would do might be proof that I have forgotten the simple fact that the other person is a different human being from me.
That is why I let go of expectations. Instead, I deeply understand what kind of person they are, and even if things don't go as I wish, I hold onto hope (trust) that "this person will act in their own way." And as a form of sincerity I can offer, I want to do my best to meet the expectations that others place in me.
A Stress-Free, Flat Relationship
Not trying to control the other person, and not forcing my ego upon them.
Since I decided that, the stress in my interpersonal relationships has disappeared to a surprising degree.
"Not expecting" does not mean giving up on the other person, but ratheracknowledging the other person's freedom and accepting them as they are.
It means freeing both myself and the other person from the invisible chains of "Isn't this normal?" That is the etiquette I have arrived at for engaging with people sincerely.
As long as I carry this amulet of "not expecting" in my heart, I feel that I can continue to meet people with a fair amount of sincerity.
