Life is a serial drama. You might be in the middle of resolving the greatest 'foreshadowing' right now. | Amulet Encyclopedia
"I wonder what will happen to my life from here on out."
Whenever I reach that point of hesitation, I always make it a point to offer these words to myself, and to the person seeking advice before me.
"Life is a serial drama. And you are the one writing the script."
Actually, there was a time when I was seriously aiming to become a screenwriter.
My goal was to write the script for one of those 'morning dramas.' Even now, that fire still burns quietly (or perhaps, rather brazenly) somewhere in my heart, but back then, I spent my days attending school and submitting entries to numerous competitions.
The 'living' people that Akiko Nogi's works taught me about
Even among dramas, I especially love serial dramas.
In particular, I have a soft spot for the works of screenwriter Akiko Nogi.
I don't know how many times I've rewatched 'Publicity Office' (Sora Tobu Koho-shitsu), and then there's 'The Full-Time Wife Escapist' (NigeHaji), 'Unnatural,' 'MIU404'... I've immersed myself in those worlds so much that I've practically memorized the lines.
The real thrill of Nogi's works is that development where the scattered threads are vividly and powerfully woven into a single story leading up to the final episode.
It makes me feel that the characters there are not just symbols, but flesh-and-blood human beings who are 'truly living there.' It's the sensation of experiencing their lives right along with them.
That heart-pounding feeling was the magic of storytelling for me.
'The worst events' are foreshadowing for a happy ending
Now, as a fortune teller, I spend my days touching upon the life stories of many people.
During readings, I often tell them:
"You are the screenwriter of this drama."
This is something I can say with conviction precisely because I used to write scripts myself.
What would happen if you set the 'final episode' of your own life drama to be a happy ending?
The 'sad things' or 'things that don't go as planned' happening right in front of you now.
Those episodes that seem like the worst at first glance actually turn into 'vivid foreshadowing' essential for a happy ending.
"It's precisely because I struggled so much back then that I have this happiness now."
An important part of the script, meant for looking back and laughing.
If you view today with that thought in mind, doesn't the usual, unchanging scenery strangely start to look like the 'scenery of a protagonist'?
Who will you play?
Try spending your time making yourself the protagonist of your drama.
That is a special charm for cherishing yourself.
Now, for this page of the story that is today.
What kind of protagonist will you play?
Will you go with a charming smile like Gakky?
Or will you move forward with a dignified strength like Satomi Ishihara?
No matter how turbulent the developments, it is sure to become a masterpiece that makes you think, 'I'm glad I watched it!' in the end.
After all, you are the one holding the pen.
