A Season of Large Temperature Fluctuations: Manage Temperatures Carefully!

Hello. I am Takahiro Ogawa, an agricultural management supporter. It was hot just a little while ago, but autumn has suddenly arrived. The sun is still strong during the day, but there are days when it feels chilly at night, aren't there?

In greenhouse cultivation, when the sun is strong, the temperature inside the greenhouse rises significantly, exceeding 30°C, so it is still truly hot. However, in the evening, the outside air temperature drops rapidly. There are now days when the nighttime outside temperature falls below 15°C.

Since the optimal nighttime cultivation temperature for tomatoes is 12–15°C, we must also start maintaining our heating equipment.

Autumn in the Kinki region, in particular, has many sunny days, and when there are no clouds in the sky at night, it gets even colder due to "radiative cooling," dropping to around 10°C.

Radiative cooling is a phenomenon where the ground is warmed by the sun's heat during the day, but at night, the ground releases the heat it received from the sun during the day. At that time, the surrounding air is cooled along with the ground, and the temperature drops. Especially on clear nights, there is nothing to block the radiation of heat, so radiative cooling progresses.

If you feel at ease because it is warm during the day, you may find that it gets extremely cold at night.

In other words, the temperature difference between day and night, or the diurnal temperature range, becomes large. While having some temperature difference is good for plant cultivation, if the nighttime temperature becomes too low, it will affect growth, so caution is required.

It is important to check the data thoroughly rather than relying on human skin sensation.

Since crude oil prices are also high, I don't want to use heaters too much, but in tomato cultivation, if the nighttime temperature inside the greenhouse falls below 12°C, we have to start using heaters.

I would be grateful if this current period lasted longer, but the situation is that the intensely hot summer is long, autumn is short, and winter is normally cold, isn't it?

It is nerve-wracking for farm management as well.
