Timing is Key for Long-Term Cultivation (Agriculture)
In soil-based tomato cultivation, to harvest many flavorful fruits, it is important to promote vegetative growth so that the plant, which serves as the foundation for fruit development, does not neglect root growth while advancing reproductive growth. In other words, it is essential to control the balance between reproductive growth and vegetative growth. Top-dressing is effective for this purpose.
For tomatoes and eggplants, long-term harvesting is possible by controlling and simultaneously advancing vegetative growth, which develops stems, leaves, and roots, and reproductive growth, which promotes flowering and fruit set. The timing of the first top-dressing is crucial for this control. Since vegetative growth is vigorous in the early stages of growth, starting top-dressing at this point causes stems and leaves to grow thick, increasing the amount of photosynthetic products, which in turn causes more stems and leaves to grow, further increasing the amount of photosynthesis. This is a state of overgrowth. When this happens, growth disorders such as abnormal stems occur, the growth of flowers and fruits is neglected and worsens, and it becomes difficult for fruits to grow.

However, once flowering progresses to a certain extent, photosynthetic products begin to concentrate in the fruits. At this stage, there is no longer any concern about overgrowth. On the other hand, the amount of photosynthetic products going to the stems and leaves decreases, so the growth of stems and leaves begins to decline. Therefore, it is at this timing that you should start top-dressing to promote vegetative growth.
In the case of the medium-sized 'Frutica' tomatoes I grow on my farm:
"Ensure fruit set on the first cluster and suppress initial plant vigor, then thoroughly apply top-dressing starting from the flowering of the fourth cluster. Also, since recovery of plant vigor is delayed if the number of flowers increases in winter, strive to maintain plant vigor by thinning fruits, especially from December to January, leaving 6 to 8 fruits (flowers). (Takii Seed HP)"
This is the approach.

If the stems, leaves, and roots are healthy, the amount of photosynthetic products increases, and the amount reaching the fruits also increases, resulting in better flavor. Thereafter, as flowering and fruit set progress, the amount of photosynthetic products goes to the flowers and fruits, and the growth of stems, leaves, and roots declines. Therefore, top-dress regularly to support the growth of stems and roots (vegetative growth). By doing this, long-term harvesting becomes possible.
The timing of the first top-dressing and the frequency of subsequent top-dressing vary depending on the vegetable. To perform more effective top-dressing, it is necessary to adjust the timing while observing the condition of the plants. Perform growth diagnosis before and after the top-dressing period, and if the plant vigor is weak, advance the timing of the top-dressing. If the plant is overgrown, delay the top-dressing and start it after the plant vigor has settled.
