[For Home Gardens] Easy Sweet Basil Cultivation Starting from Seedlings: From Selection to Harvest
Hello. I am Takahiro Ogawa, an agricultural management supporter. In this article, I will explain the secrets to growing sweet basil, a popular herb for home gardens, from seedlings so you can enjoy its fresh aroma, covering everything from how to choose the seedlings to harvesting!
If you choose high-quality seedlings and follow these key management tips, even beginners can harvest plenty of fragrant sweet basil. Please give it a try!
1. Sweet Basil Cultivation Schedule Starting from Seedlings
When growing from seedlings, you can enjoy harvesting sooner than if you started from seeds. (This assumes a typical temperate region. Please adjust according to the climate in your area.)
Late April to early June: Purchase and planting of seedlings (once temperatures reach 15°C or higher)
Mid-May to October: Harvest

2. How to Choose Seedlings: Identifying Healthy Ones!
It is no exaggeration to say that choosing the right seedlings determines the success or failure of your cultivation. Check the following points carefully to select healthy seedlings.
Leaf Color:
Choose ones with vibrant green leaves that are free of spots or discoloration. Avoid those with yellowish or blackened leaves.
Leaf Density:
Choose ones with dense foliage and a well-balanced overall shape. Seedlings that are spindly or leggy may have weak growth potential.
Stem Thickness:
Choose ones with thick, sturdy stems. Thin, wobbly seedlings may be prone to falling over in the wind.
Presence of Pests or Disease:
Check the undersides of the leaves for pests like aphids and look for signs of disease (such as white powdery substances or black spots).
Bottom of the Pot:
Check if the roots are growing too much out of the bottom of the pot. If the plant is root-bound, its growth after planting may be poor.
Check the Label:
Make sure there is a label indicating the variety name (confirm it is sweet basil) and the planting time.
Compare Multiple Seedlings:
If possible, compare several seedlings and choose the one that looks the healthiest.

3. Planting: Moving Seedlings to a New Environment
Once you have chosen healthy seedlings, it is time to plant them.
Planting Time:
Wait until the minimum temperature is 15°C or higher before planting. It is safest to wait until there is no risk of late frost.
Planting Location:
Choose a location with good sunlight and good drainage.
Soil Preparation:
About 1 to 2 weeks before planting, mixing in magnesium lime to adjust the acidity, along with compost and organic fertilizer, will improve growth. For container gardening, using potting soil for vegetables is easy and convenient.
Spacing:
For ground planting, space them about 20–30 cm apart; for containers, space them so the plants do not overlap.

Planting Method:
Gently remove the seedling from the pot and plant it, being careful not to disturb the root ball. Water thoroughly after planting.
4. Post-Planting Care: Growing Delicious Basil
Even after planting, diligent care is the secret to growing delicious basil.
Watering:
Water thoroughly once the soil surface is dry. Especially during summer or dry periods, be sure to water frequently.
Fertilizing:
While observing the growth, apply diluted liquid fertilizer about once or twice a month.
Pinching (Topping):
When the plant reaches about 20 cm in height, pinch off the top bud. This encourages side shoots to grow, making the plant bushier and increasing the harvest.
Pruning Side Shoots:
Pinching off side shoots that grow from the base of the leaves in moderation improves airflow and helps prevent pests and diseases.
Pest and Disease Control:
Aphids and other pests can easily attach to the plants, so remove them as soon as you find them. Maintaining a well-ventilated environment is also important.
Sunlight:
Sweet basil loves sunlight. Grow it in a place that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight per day.

5. Harvesting: Enjoy the fresh aroma!
You can start harvesting about a month after planting.
Harvesting time:
The best time to harvest is when the plant reaches 20–30 cm in height and the leaves are lush.
How to harvest:
Carefully snip the leaves off at the base with scissors. Harvesting tip: If you harvest while leaving the growth points, new leaves will continue to emerge, allowing you to enjoy a long harvest. Since the leaves become tough when the plant flowers, pinch off any flower buds as soon as you see them.
6. Make it even better! One-point advice for cultivation
Notes on container gardening:
Containers dry out easily, so be careful not to let them run out of water. Place drainage stones at the bottom to improve drainage.
Placement:
Place it in a sunny spot, but if the midsummer direct sunlight is too intense, try moving it to a semi-shaded area.
Continuous cropping disorder:
Planting basil in the same spot repeatedly can lead to poor growth. If growing in containers, replace the soil; if planting in the ground, wait a few years before planting again or improve the soil.

Summary
Growing sweet basil from seedlings is attractive because even beginners can start easily and enjoy a harvest in a relatively short period. By choosing healthy seedlings and managing them with proper watering, supplemental feeding, and pinching, you can enjoy a long harvest of fragrant sweet basil.
