Preface: 🎬Before watching 'Wicked'

I've been watching WOWOW since I was a child,
and they had a double feature broadcast
of the movie versions of
'The Wizard of Oz' and 'Wicked'!

I wanted to see the stage version of
Wicked but couldn't💦
I thought, the movie version is here~~~!!!
and I was getting excited.

They were broadcasting it as a two-part series
with 'The Wizard of Oz' starring Judy Garland.

The Wizard of Oz,
did I read it when I was a child??
I only had vague memories like that.

So, I decided to watch 'The Wizard of Oz'
as preparation for 'Wicked'!

I've always been interested in Judy Garland's work,
but I rarely had the chance to see it.
Black and white movies and films from Hollywood's Golden Age

aren't really on subscription services.
If you miss the chance, you don't get to see them.

🎬 1. The Original Landscape of the Soul: Over the Rainbow

At the beginning, I thought 'Over the Rainbow',
sung by Judy Garland, was not just a famous song.
It captures your heart right here.
The way she sings quietly,

as if talking to herself,
is as if it projected
the original landscape of the soulexactly as it is.It's not sung in a dramatic musical style,
but with a voice like


a prayer spilling from within
It seeps straight into the depths of the unconscious.Rather than just moving the heart,it was a moment where the soul resonated.

She must have still been active as a child actor,
but Judy Garland is formidable!
I couldn't help but think that.

🌈 2. The Revolution of Color = Mental World

As soon as the protagonist Dorothy
arrived in the magical land,
having been swept up by a tornado
from the real world of Kansas.

The entire screen switches from sepia
to the crisp color footage
typical of the Technicolor era.
I was watching without knowing

this famous production at all,
and at that moment in front of the TV,
I was completely blown away.

▶︎ I saw the origin of a now-common technique

This is truly a revolutionary technique in film history.
The manual coloring via Technicolor felt like a mechanism to make you
experience through color
the entry into a world beyond reality = the realm of the unconscious.
In other words,

color = visualization of the mental world. The audience feels they have arrived in another world without needing any logical explanation.

▶︎ The creators' passion is imbued in the magic of color

Back in 1939, for those who saw this on the screen for the first time,
it must have been an unforgettable experience.

Even for me, watching it at home on a streaming service,
it was a captivating technique.

Even when viewed today,
it still feels like a miracle of handmade light and chemistry.

Without any digital processing,
in an era without VFX,
the fact that they created this using analog methods
felt like madness in a sense.

It is similar to but distinct from color correction on smartphone photos;
it gave the impression that
life itself resided within the light.
Countless raw emotions from the creators must be packed into it.

🧱 3. Handmade visuals = life-risking obsession

Films back then were all analog and handmade.
Filming, developing, color correction, costumes, stage sets...
Everything is a crystallization of human hands.

That is precisely why, more than modern VFX films,
the soul and obsession are conveyed through the screen.
A level of intensity that reaches even the audience's unconscious.

The fact that I can feel this energy of creation, which was done at the risk of their lives,
even when watching it on a modern streaming service,
might be because I am a highly empathic HSP
.

▶︎ The merits of being a highly sensitive HSP and empath

Where others might perhaps
feel it is just an old-fashioned work,
I received the vibrations of life from it,
and my heart was shaken.

The sensitivity of HSPs and empaths is often focused on
the fact that it tends to cause stress,
confusion, and agitation.

But I believe it is a very good thing
to be able to fully perceive the richness of such works
and the mentality behind artistic creations.

Such universal stories
are so packed with symbolism
that if you write them out carefully,
there is no end to it lol
