The Complete Techniques for Writing Clear Sentences: '100-Day Challenge'
"Action is everything"
Good morning. This is Zero.
This is the 16th installment of improving writing skills.
Starting today, I'm beginning a '100-Day Challenge'.
I will put the 100 complete techniques for writing skills
into practice, one by one.
Voice Transcription
Well then, let's get started.
■ Actually improving writing skills
From now on, I will be posting with the theme of improving writing skills.
"100 Complete Techniques for Communicating Clearly"
I intend to write articles that put the contents of this book into practice.
I finished reading the book the other day.
Just reading it doesn't actually make your writing better.
It's the same with sports or anything else.
Even if you read about good practice methods in a book, you won't get better unless you actually try them.
I read a book on writing skills.
It contained 100 techniques.
"Oh, I see. That makes sense."
If you stop there, you won't improve any skills.
There are 100 techniques in total.
To 'practice 1 through 100' of those 100 items,
if I write one Note article a day, it will take 100 days.
"100-Day Challenge"
I think I'll give it a try.
That said, I'd pass out if I did it every single day.
I will do a '100-Time Challenge'.
001 Choose easy-to-understand words ---- Use common language
■ Choose easy-to-understand words
The first theme is choosing easy-to-understand words.
I will also link to Note articles with similar content in my series on improving writing skills.
I am reading the book after having written my Kindle book and Note articles on improving writing skills.
It's not plagiarism or copying, but I apologize if it seems like I am.
Here is an example written in the book.
Use easy-to-understand words. Avoid technical jargon.
Bad example: 'Mark that spot with tape.'
Good example: 'Mark that spot with a piece of tape.'
Bad example: 'The stock price is down because investors took profits.'
Good example: 'The stock price is down because investors sold their shares to lock in profits.'
Even if we are used to using technical terms ourselves, there is a high possibility that they will not be understood by the general public. Please omit them as much as possible. Replace them with easy-to-understand words.
However, those who use them may not see that they are difficult to understand.
Be careful, such as by checking with people outside the industry.
I have previously given examples such as 'bone meta'.
This is bone metastasis of cancer. This is difficult.
Bone meta is not understood by the general public.
■ Difficult words I use
I would like to list words that I often use and assume are understood, but are not common.
What do people around me think when they hear them?
Maybe they are used to it by now. To not understanding.
Words I often use,'bias', 'Barnum'
'That's just Barnum, isn't it?'
I don't think this will be understood.
'Covered in bias'
I don't think this will be understood either.
'You're just interpreting it conveniently with Barnum and confirmation bias'
It's a full combo, and I don't even know what I'm saying anymore.
Let's replace Barnum.
Applying a general story to you.
That is what it means.
Something that applies to many people.
Telling that to one person to make them think 'amazing'.
That is the Barnum effect.
An example that applies to anyone
'You are the type who cares too much about other people's opinions, aren't you?'
'Huh? How did you know?'
No, no, that's just Barnum.
Let's add cold reading to that.
'To make assumptions and lead the conversation'.
'You are the type who cares too much about other people's opinions, aren't you?'
'No, I don't think so. I'm independent and don't care about those around me.'
If they answer like that,
'You might just not have realized it yet'
If you say that, you can get away with it.
This is what happens in staff interviews or 1-on-1s.
Bad example
In staff interviews, I want to avoid talking about general abstractions when it seems like we are talking about individual, specific matters. Using Barnum or cold reading is meaningless.
Good example
In staff interviews, I want to avoid situations where I try to convince staff by talking about general ways of working rather than their specific actions or what they have done. Leading a conversation with generalities that apply to anyone or using a presumptive tone will not lead to staff growth.
Aren't the examples too difficult?
■ Just translating katakana into Japanese doesn't make it easier to understand
I like psychological effects and use them often.
I use them thinking they are understood, but they probably aren't.
For example, the Dunning-Kruger effect.
To put it simply, the feeling of invincibility felt by an amateur.
That hasn't made it any easier to understand at all.
What is the feeling of invincibility felt by an amateur?
It's a psychological state where, when you start something, you cannot grasp your own ability, your self-evaluation becomes high, and you tend to think you can do more than you actually can.
It's difficult when asked to make this even simpler.
The excitement and thrill when you first start, the misunderstanding that you can do anything.
This is about as far as I can go.
Second example
The Zajonc effect.
To put it simply, the mere exposure effect
Just translating it into Japanese doesn't make it easier to understand.
It's not always good to just convert katakana into Japanese.
This is something I need to be careful about.
The Zajonc effect.
It means that meeting someone many, many times creates a sense of familiarity.
If you don't replace the words, just translating it into Japanese won't make it understandable.
I want to be careful and review this area.
This much difficulty on day 001.
Will I actually be able to continue?
I want to do my best with the 100-day challenge.
I am doing a live stream on stand.fm every day at 7:30 PM.
I hope you have a wonderful day today as well.
Let's meet again.
