A system to protect freedom by dividing power
Separation of Powers is a system of government that prevents the concentration of power by dividing state authority into three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial, with each branch monitoring the others.
In the 18th century, the French thinker Charles de Montesquieu argued in his book "The Spirit of the Laws" that state power must not be concentrated in one place in order to protect freedom.
This concept had a major influence on the political systems of modern states and remains the foundation of the constitutions and governance systems of many countries today. In the
Separation of Powers,
Legislative: Makes laws
Executive: Executes laws
Judicial: Makes judgments based on laws
Each has an independent role, and by mutually restraining each other's authority, they prevent power from being concentrated in a single institution or individual.
This mechanism is also called "checks and balances" and has become one of the important principles supporting democratic nations.
While the structure of the system and the distribution of authority vary by country, the basic philosophy of dispersing power and protecting the rule of law and the freedom of the people remains the same.
Separation of Powers is an essential fundamental principle for understanding modern constitutional systems and the political operations of democratic nations.
